Chance a Terrified Junior with High Hopes and Bad Luck...

Well if you’re really committed to BME I think you’ll do well. It’s a difficult major, so forewarned is forearmed.
I want to be a neurologist as well, so we have something in common.
As far as Duke goes, obviously I’m not an admissions officer, so I can only say that the higher your scores, the better your chances will be, because I think the rest of your resume looks good.

Also, is there any way you can keep the humanitarian club going without school funding? You might want to check out dosomething.org and see if there are any projects that you and your friends could do. That way, you could still have the club even if your school isn’t paying for it. That’s what we did with Spanish club at our school.

I forgot to mention this in the original post, but our school is a pretty large feeder to UNC-CH, like 40-50 kids get accepted every year and about 20-25 attend.

Updates: I received an A for my final grade in AP English L/C, so that’s set. Also, instead of AP Chemistry senior year, I’ll be taking AP Physics C (my friends and I just got it passed :D).

@AznCo0Co0: Is a B in AP Calc that bad? I mean math really isn’t my forte…and if we were on the 10-point scale like the rest of the country, I would have an A. At my school, one takes AP Calc AB first semester and AP Calc BC second semester, and we take the AP Calc BC exam in May. Thanks for the chances!

@djdopeslap: Yeah so I’ve heard lol. I feel like majoring in BME is a great way to segue into medical school, and I like engineering.
For our Humanitarian club, it’s already been scratched. At our school, kids are really competitive and try to start new clubs, so a lot of “member” students fluctuate between new clubs, causing the older, student-run clubs to lose advisors and die, so to speak. I guess I’ll still put it down to show that I did take the initiative, but my counselor will elaborate on the situation more in the rec. Thanks!

bump pleaseeeeee

I think you have pretty decent stats, overall.

Duke ED - I don’t know much, but I’m also planning to apply to Duke and I think I have pretty okay chances. My stats are also lower than yours (kind of) so I guess by default you must have good chances?

Johns Hopkins - I think you have a pretty good chance. I know tons of people that have gotten in. Their stats, as far as I know, were mostly under or at par with yours.

Harvard/Princeton/Brown - These are kind of reachy in my opinion. I think your SAT score holds you back with these schools (which is pretty much what everyone else said)

UNC-Chapel Hill - aren’t you in-state? so this is like your safety…

Georgia Tech/Wake Forest/NC State - I know nothing about these schools.

Emory - you have an adequate chance. I think you could get in with a little boost in your SAT scores

Vanderbilt/UCSD/Carnegie Mellon/WUSTL/Rice - same as with Emory

Georgetown - hard to predict… why do you even want to go here? if you’re into the whole science thing…

UVA - reachy, only because you’re out of state and not some star athlete

Thanks nritya! I’ll chance you back in a few.

Any more advice/chances? Besides raising the scores lol

Duke ED (Main Choice) - Reach. Would be high reach, but you’re applying ED so you should technically have a better shot.
Johns Hopkins (2nd Choice/possibly main choice with aid/scholarship) - Reach
Harvard/Princeton, 1 of the 2 (Crapshoot lol) - Will not happen. I’d suggest you not even bother applying.
Brown - Most likely will not happen. Don’t apply if you want to save money.
UNC-Chapel Hill - ?
Georgia Tech - ?
Wake Forest - ?
NC State -?
Emory - Low reach
Vanderbilt - Reach - high reach
UCSD - High match
Case Western Reserve–Scholarship? - ?
Carnegie Mellon - ?
WUSTL - Reach
Rice - Reach
Georgetown - Reach
UVA - Reach

I’m going to be perfectly frank with you : your numbers aren’t good enough for most of these schools. Even if you were Native American or African American you’d still have trouble getting into some of these - and considering your Indian ethnicity, I’d say that it’s going to be a long, uphill battle. I’m not sure if the schools I’m not familiar with are safeties, but you need a lot more safeties. Trim your list for most of the reaches, or you’ll end up extremely disappointed come spring of '11.

You’re definitely a strong match for UNC considering your ethnicity, I would figure Wake Forest to be the same. I’m assuming NC State is your safety.
