i have some community service.. not a lot tho
letter of recommendations and application essays will be decent, but not amazing
my mom works at hopkins, i dont know if that helps or not but hopkins does get to save 25k a year if i get accepted there.

Well UMD is obviously your safety, and the rest are somewhat reaches (maybe not JHU). Just write killer essays and i dont see why you couldnt get into one of your reaches. Maybe get some matchier schools though like CMU or Emory though just to be safe

decent grades, good SAT scores, work on ECs
I’d say Duke is a high Match, Cornell is a low reach, WashU and Maryland are High Matches/Low Reaches, Hopkins you should be fine if your mom works there

Duke - High Match/Low Reach

Johns Hopkins - Mid/High Match

WashU - Match/High Match

Cornell- Low Reach

University of Maryland @ College Park - Safety/In

Internships, especially at the NIH, are always a plus. You have a decent SAT scores (although it could be boosted) and AP scores. Could you please post your ranking/percentile based on your grade? Something that may be a snag is your lightness in leadership positions. In any case, I wish you the best of luck!

I can’t say safety-reach-dream (sorry, think that rating is odd), but you are a good student and you definitely have a shot at Cornell and Hopkins. The others I am not so familiar with, except for Duke, which is good as well, both as a school and as a probable chance for you.

Be confident. You do have the athlete label in your favor.
Here’s a story: a girl with stats not nearly as good as yours got in from Stuyvesant (don’t actually go there myself, please note), the most competitive HS in the tri-state area. It’s hard to get someplace even halfway decent from there—so your stats will probably get you through. BEWARE THOUGH: With mind-boggling admissions these days, who knows?
P.S. Apply early to a school you really like, for all academic and economic purposes for you and your family, go with Hopkins—it’s stunning with the sciences.

Duke (Trinity school of arts and sciences) – low reach (the under 700 CR score will hurt you)

Johns Hopkins – reach

WashU – match

Cornell – match/high match

University of Maryland @ College Park – safety

Duke (Trinity school of arts and sciences) - Low Reach

Johns Hopkins - Mid Reach

WashU - High Match

Cornell - High Match

University of Maryland @ College Park - Safety

thx for your inputs everyone! i chanced back everyone who replied and gave me the link.

i have noticed that a lot of you have said i need improvement in my ECs. can anyone give any suggestions as how to improve them? (join more clubs?, etc)

You have very solid stats. Your tests are at that 2200+ range that seems so necessary for many of those top schools. Also, while your GPA is not the greatest, but within that desired 3.8-4.0 range, your academics look solid. As for the rest, I would tidy up ECs, essays, and recs to make sure you have an awesome shot.

Duke: High Match/ Low reach( because it is basically the Harvard of the South, so it will be difficult to breeze though. However, yoru chances look good)

John Hopkins: High Match/ Low reach (You have a great shot though)

Washington University: Solid Match

Cornell: Low reach (Ivys are tough cookies, but the CR 25-75 range is lower here than at any other Ivy, starting with 630-?, so I think you have a great shot.)

Univeristy of Maryland: Safty, but I am just guessing on this one. :P

To boost your Ecs, I strongly suggest the following:

Considering your internship for NIH, your interests seem to be in science, correct? If possible, find another internships opportunity during the school year and found a Science-oriented club in your senior year, such as the Science Olympiad or perhaps a Biology/Chemistry Club.

Duke - low reach
JHU - low reach/high match, but a different situation since your mom works there, so your chances are improved
WashU - still a High match/low reach, has a smaller acceptance rate than then Duke/JHU
Cornell - low reach
Maryland - Safety

Duke (Trinity school of arts and sciences) - reach

Johns Hopkins - low reach

WashU - ?

Cornell - low reach

University of Maryland @ College Park - ?
