Hey guys, I'm applying for Fall 2015 into either communications or political science (haven't decided yet). I currently attend a community college in North Carolina. I will have 41 credits completed after this Fall semester by the time I apply. In HS, my stats were average. I had a bad senior year as a result of taking harder courses than I could handle, so it dropped my GPA to a 2.9 UW and 3.5 W. Going into senior year, I believe I had a 4.0 weighted GPA.

College stats: 4.0 GPA

EC's:

Have my own sports blog

President's list twice

(HS) FBLA member. Helped organize and participate in a small scale fundraiser for veterans.

(HS) Helped organize/participate in "trunk or treat"

Phi Theta Kappa member

Part time job. Will have been there a little under 2 years by the time I apply. Received a promotion in March 2014.

(HS) Roughly 40 hours of volunteer work spread out between a local soup kitchen and retirement home.

My letter(s) of recommendation will come from an English professor I had last Fall. He always complemented me on my writing, I figured that would be good as a journalism/comm major. Also going to ask my Communications professor from last Fall as well.

What are my chances? Any advice? Thanks guys!

No I believe he was correct. 55 credits is for junior standing, and I saw someone say on here that people that get in with less than 55 typically would have gotten in out of high school. I can’t seem to find anywhere on the website where it says this though, @MaxSDax, could you link me?

@billcsho, As @NCXfer mentioned, I did mean >=14 cr. in order to reach 55 cr. and junior standing.

@NCXfer, there’s plentiful examples all around the forum - can’t find one from a reliable source; however, when I was going through the transfer process I called David Betts (Recruiting and Amissions Counselor for CoE), and that’s essentially what he said.

Just some other things he mentioned that you might ind interesting: CoE has a slightly lower acceptance rate, but the biggest is factor is by department. The more popular departments, have a drastically lower acceptance rate, where the unpopular ones have the inverse.

I know getting 55+ credit would get you junior standing (at least for tuition purpose), but I don’t see how would that be critical for the transfer. I know many sophomores just transferred into UMich. Also you need to find out whether your credit can be transferred. Having 55 credits does not mean you may transfer all those credits. Indeed, I think there is a cap on transferrable credits at 60 for LSA. Having 55+ credit would make you pay upperclassman tuition which may not necessary mean you may graduate within 2 years depending on your major and graduation requirement.

Does UMich typically provide decent enough aid? I’m obviously OOS and my EFC is about $9k. I’m kind of worried about the price tag, because I really would like to go there and I don’t want my decision to have to come down to finances.

UMich does not meet need for oos students, so your out of pocket cost is likely much more than $9k (current CoA ~$54k/yr). Nevertheless, very low income family may get some generous financial aids. You should check the NPC to get some idea.
