Hey all,

I’m a sophomore at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor looking to transfer upwards and outwards. I didn’t do so well, grade-wise, in High School, but I had decent SATs and ECs. I also transferred high schools after freshman yr. Here are some important HS stats:

GPA: [we had a very weird point-scale, out of 11, but I think it translated into about 3.1/4.0]

SAT: 2050
-Critical Reading: 680
-Math: 650
-Writing: 720

APs: World History - 5, Biology-3, English-4

ECs:
-Lots of creative writing, one state-wide award
-3 years Quiz Bowl team – Captain – Led to 2nd place overall in state competition (Michigan)
-4 yrs. Chess Club – Academic Letter – Founder, President, County Chess Club
-2 years varsity Cross Country (though I quit junior yr.)
-2 years varsity track and field (again, quit jr. yr.)
-1 yr. Drama, including lead role in play and minor role in another
-Vice-President, Junior Statesmen of America
-some other random, non-leadership things (I am a joiner…)

I also worked full-time every summer after 10th grade at a Tier 1 university as a research assistant. Also, after my senior year, I worked for about 200 hours total at a nursing home. (While simultaneously working full-time at said university.)

College has gone much better GPA-wise at a top-25 university. I am a Philosophy and English double-major. I had a 3.73 GPA for my freshman year—15 credits 1st semester, 18 cr. 2nd (the max.) I am currently taking 18 credits.

I am also a voting member of the Board of Directors for a housing cooperative, which has a net worth of over $15mil and a multi-million operating budget. I’m also simultaneously my house's president. (This is not common—both are time-consuming.) I am very interested in creative writing, and am fairly confident I can get two recs from published authors who knew me in intimate, less-than-20-people seminars and who both gave me A’s. (One of them has published 25 books and is a grad of Columbia; the other has won a Pushcart prize and is having her book published this year.) I think I can raise or at the very least maintain my GPA this semester.

So…what are my chances and what do I need to do to improve them?
