Hello I am a high senior and was just wondering what you guys thought my chances are of getting into College Park undecided for the College of Arts and Sciences for the fall of 2011. UMD is my number one choice although I am aware I have virtually no chance of getting in. I have visited the campus three times and loved it and I keep in touch with the admission officer for my area. My school last year had 62 accepted. On my Naviance I'm at the lower end but there are still a decent amount of people that were expected with lower stats than me. Give me whatever input you have I really appreciate it although I don't think I even have a shot lol.

I attend a highly competitive public school in NJ that is consistenly ranked in the top 10 in the state. We send around 20 something kids to Ivies each year an many to top 25 schools.

So I am a urm: African American male

Gpa: 3.4uw 3.6w

Course load: mostly honors classes and I have taken 3 Ap classes government, us history , and french

SAT: combined 1770 only two sections is 1190
Cr: 620 math:570 writing: 580

I think my essays were pretty good and I'm sure my recs were great my teachers both loved me.

As of now I was accepted into : Penn state university park
Temple Drexel Hofstra and university of Pittsburgh

So thank you to everyone in advance for reading my post. I really appreciate any input you have to give. Sorry if this post looks weird this is actually my first post on this lol.

I’m not so sure about out of staters, but there are a lot of jersey kids here. My friend (in-state) got in with a 3.2, 1900, a similar courseload to you, and almost no extracurriculurs. He was surprised to get in fall semester though. Also, we’re both from a school that would not sound anything like the caliber of your high school on paper (I still loved it though). I’d say you have a pretty good chance though.

I agree - UMD looks like a high match for you. Your SAT scores are obv. on the lower end and in fact your GPA is on the lower end as well (avg. GPA for incoming students is 3.8W) but it will help that you are an URM and took a challenging course load at a challenging school. An average is just that…there are some people above it and some below it. I can see how you might be one of the people accepted below it, being an URM from a good school. Of course, you are also from NJ, which will work against you. But congrats on the acceptances you already have in hand UPitt, Penn State, and Temple are the type of schools a lot of UMD-ish people (statwise and interest wise) apply to. My guess is that if you are in at all of these schools UMD is likely to accept you as well since it is around the same range in terms of types of students accepted.

I think you have a pretty good shot at getting in.
Your CR score is pretty high and goes with their stats.
Both your M score and GPA are close but a little low.

If you haven’t already seen it you should check out:
my chances . net
The website actually gives you a percentage chance, I don’t know how accurate it is though.

Thanks I hope so even with there being 13% of African Americans there which is alot more compared to all other schools. Anyone else have an opinion

I think you have a shot. Your Sats r definitely in the range and coming from a competitive highschool is really a plus even with your GPA, but being out of state might hurt so idk. My bet is a yes though ^^

UMD is a reach for you just like NYU is one for me unfortunately, however I do feel that you have a chance. You fill in every criteria for grades, you have a B+/A- and your SAT scores are slightly low for the college. I think that if you applied early enough and your essay is unique from other applicants then you are fine. The perk of your stats is that you come from a school in NJ that ranks top 10, you do have a chance.
