touhou -nothing to apologize for, it is just human nature and in your case the whole chancing thing is harmless enough. You already have your apps in and you seem fairly realistic about your chances. Dreaming is great, and you just never know about some of these admissions. Some people, however, think that what people tell them on here about their chances is like a real decision, don’t apply to safeties, and get shut out of schools. Those are extreme cases to be sure, but in the less extreme cases people get truly depressed when they get turned down because people on CC told them they would get in. Seems silly I know, but it happens. You clearly are not like that.

The nice thing in your case is that if the only schools you got into were Centre, Depauw and Tulane you are still in great shape. I know 4 Centre grads at least (I lived in Louisville for 6 years) and they loved it and got a great education. They have also done quite well for themselves, btw. DePauw I know much less about, and you probably know that I love Tulane (alum and current parent). So anywhere else you get in is a bonus, which is how you have to look at it. I know you want Vandy, and that is understandable. Wonderful school, great campus. Been there a dozen times at least. Good people. I wish you the best of luck with that.

I am personally too lazy to categorize matches as high, medium and low.

Note that UChicago is also higher ranked than WUSTL, and has much higher name recognition. from my own experience, a lot more people get into WUSTL (from my school) than UChicago as well. My opinion is that UChicago is more concerned with people that are interesting and have potential in some area, as shown by their rather high admit rate, and interesting essay prompts. I would like to go there, but the cold might be a bit of a problem over four years. Ah well, maybe for grad school.

But anywho, here’s a slightly revised thing.

Vanderbilt-low to mid reach
Emory-high match
Centre-in
WUSTL-high match
Stanford-high reach
Penn-mid reach
UChicago-mid reach
Tulane-in
Depauw-in

My suggestion: unless your AP English teacher, your Counselor and/or someone who HATES READING tells you that your 1K word treatise on your life is an engaging, excellent read, shorten it.

What does this have to do with admissions selectivity? It is disingenuous to disregard the stats and make judgments purely on your own experience.

WashU’s and Chicago’s stats were both deleted by the CollegeBoard, so you can’t compare them. At least per the stats that were on CollegeBoard a while ago, Chicago’s SATs were higher.

At the 25th percentile, according to NCES (Fall 2009), WashU had higher scores for ACT Composite and SAT Math. (Chicago had slightly higher scores in SAT CR.)

fallenchemist, i want to thank you. you’re too cool, and i appreciate everything you’ve said. what were some of your favorite parts of tulane? and in-state tuition and kees money help at centre :)

touhou - Thanks! I like being “too cool”, nice for an old fart like me, lol. BTW, probably repeating myself, but Vandy is great. I remember the first time I stepped onto their campus about 30 years ago, I thought it was one of the nicest I had ever seen. Tulane has a great campus too, right up there with Vandy, but even a prejudiced guy like me had to admit that Vandy’s might have been even a bit nicer. Over the years some of the space at Vandy has been filled with new buildings, which is unavoidable, but it lost a bit of that classic feel. Still, one of the nicest campuses for sure.

Wow, there is so much to love about Tulane. I guess to start it is impossible to talk about Tulane and New Orleans as separate things. More than any other school I know except maybe NYU, Tulane’s identity is immeasurably tied to its location. This was always true, and it probably increased a factor of 10 after Katrina (OK, so I said it was immeasurable and then quantified it. Shoot me). Tulane is located in a gorgeous part of New Orleans, with a fantastic park across the street to compliment the campus. The weather is very nice a lot of the year. Hot to start, but then mild for most of the school year until just before leaving for summer. The school is academically challenging without being cut-throat, the profs are wonderfully accessible because the school is much more undergrad oriented than grad, yet the research is first rate and very doable for undergrads. New Orleans and food and music…'nuff said. Partying is right up there with the best, but it is also overblown by a lot of people that just assume things. I know a lot of kids there that do not drink at all or very moderately and have a great time. Greek culture is certainly there (about 25%), but not as dominant as at Vandy.

I could go on with a lot of other things, but I think you get the idea. It would make a great alternative for you, I think. Still, I hope things work out for you at Vandy.

if u get ur SAT’s up you will have a better chance at emory. also, emory has a very high asian population. So depending on ur ethnicity, you might be considered a minority (even if ur white) and have a higher chance of getting in.

i said it was 7/279 top 3%
and its just a kentucky public school, but the top 20 at our school are really competitive.
and thanks for the input!

I’m just going to leave out the schools that I haven’t looked at/heard about statistically (which probably means I’m cutting out a lot of the safety/ fit schools):
WUSTL: Reach
Stanford: High Reach
Chicago: Reach
Tulane: Fit

Vanderbilt - match/ high match
Emory - match/ high match
Centre - no idea
WUSTL - low reach
Stanford - high reach
Penn - high reach
Chicago - reach/high reach
Tulane in, good shot at $$$$$$
Depauw no idea

your gpa, class rigor and class rank are all fine, but im concerned about your testing scores. they are fairly low (comparatively) and don’t help you too much for the better schools that you’re applying to. for example, for stanford you’re basically in the bottom 25% for testing.

CBatch, that means a lot. Thanks!
and thanks for all of the input!
but i’m not too sure i would get that much at tulane, or atleast, nothing too substantial.

Vanderbilt could happen, but they have weird admissions policies.
Emory is a match
Centre you’re in
WUSTL don’t know
Stanford- you have a shot
Penn- state or u?
Chicago- could happen
Tulane- probably
Depaul- safety

Scores could be a bit higher but:
Vanderbilt match
Emory - low reach
Centre - in
WUSTL - low Reach
Stanford - high reach
Penn - hi reach
Chicago mid reach
Tulane - high mathc
Depauw - never heard of it

@gatsby: Well, generally higher rank correlates with higher selectivity though this seems to be an anomaly. My own experience is not exactly “disingenuous” as you say. It is merely a small sample size.

Even if WUSTL has “smarter” kids as measured by scores and such, there must be some reason UChicago is still ranked higher, despite the fact those who go are “dumber”.

Tulane is a pretty nice place. I live in New Orleans. :)
