Hey guys new to the forums but a long time lurker

Junior in Highschool
White Male
(I have a question though, my mother is from South Africa, am I allowed to put "African American" on application?, none of my family is black, we are all white)

Classes taken so far: (only listing academic classes)

Regular:

Algebra 1 - C (took this class on FLVS in 8th grade, did not know it would reflect on highschool transcripts...did not take class seriously making up class and I have a B, this grade will chage to a B hopefully is FSU acknowledges.

Spanish 2 - B

Honors:

Pre Calculus - B

AP Biology - B
AP US Hist. - B
AP Human Geo - B
AP World - A
AP Psychology - A

Dual Enrollment:

Social Problems - A

Are the above classes that I listed all considered "academic subjects?

[MY GPA AFTER JUNIOR YEAR WILL BE THE GPA STATED BELOW, I HAVE COME A LONG WAY TO GET THAT GPA AS MY GPA HAS HAD A GREAT UPWARD TREND] Freshmen/Sophomore year I would get C's on my final grades, now I don't get any and I am taking more challenging classes)

My unweighted GPA, according to my transcripts is a 2.8 because I received an F in physical education because I would never participate (self conscious about my body) but on FSU's website they said they DO NOT look at my highschool transcripts GPA but rather UF recalculated GPA which is below (3.56)

If calculated correctly my UF recalculated GPA is 3.56 which is not bad in my opinion. Planning on taking 1 or 2 Dual Enrollment classes at my local community college over this coming summer.
Im also taking my SAT for the first time in May I think.
Will also be doing community service during the summer etc... have about 60 hours so far.
I am part of no clubs, is it too late for me? I do not do sports.

My Senior Year Schedule (next year 2013-2014)

Engish 4 Dual Enrollment
AP Macroeconomics
AP Environmental Science
AP Statistics
Spanish 4 Honors

You won’t benefit from checking African American. They don’t check race. The whole what classifies as African American is quote complicated, but, no, you’re not African American.

Yes, all the classes that you listed are academic classes.

You’re grades aren’t the best, but, as you said, you have an upward trend. Take a couple classes in your summer. Excel in them. Get involved in your community. (It’s never too late.) Study for your ACT/SAT.

Good luck!

UF or FSU? Very different

The reality is a 3.56 UF GPA is not very high. You need about a 4.1 to be at UF’s average if I remember right. Look at the admissions page for statistics about the recently admitted class.

You also should call and ask about that F you received. Even though it is not an academic class it may destroy the small chance you had at getting in. Just ask if it will make a difference on your application. That’s what I would do anyway. Best of luck.

Oh…I totall forgot that that was their UF GPA…

That changes things a LOT.

The middle 50% had between a 4.1 and 4.4.

all I know is from these comments I gotta work harder. Im going to take classes over the summer to help boost my GPA.
I will also call about that F I received.
UF is only my second choice because I would have a better chance at getting into FSU…

I had an F in English 3 Hon., I retook this year and I got into UF. FSU deferred me and I talked to the counselor about why and she said it was because of the grade. I retook the class and ended up getting into FSU for the second round of admissions.
I got into UF. From what I got from talking to admissions about it for my situation, was it doesn’t look good, but it’s not a deal-breaker like it was with FSU. I had good grades, SAT scores, and extracurriculars, so I got in with an F on my transcript.

what were your stats when you applied? (sat/act etc…)

2020 SAT / 27 ACT
4.0 UF GPA (3.8ish before I resubmitted my grades with the made up F) (4.7 W / 3.6 UW)
rigorous senior schedule and a LOT of unique extracurricular stuff (ex. precollege programs in NYC over the summers, exchange program in Norway for all of junior year)

I know I had a lot to offset the F, but when I called admissions to ask, they made it sound like it’s not a big deal, especially if you try to give an explanation in the additional information section of the application of why you got the F. If you can find some explanation for it it probably looks a lot better than if you say nothing and act like it wasn’t a big deal.

I guess that’s racial progress? Sort of?

^ That was unnecessary…
