Chance an ambitious sophomore

Hey guys, so I'm a sophomore and my parents are those crazy people who want me to start looking into college now. So, we've visited a couple places and I'd like to know my chances of getting in. I really like Cornell and Duke, and UVA was nice. Stanford's my dream school, but I've never been there and it's ridiculously hard to get in. Oh well, here are my stats and be honest about my chances so far.

GPA: 98.6 unweighted
Rank: 2 in class of about 350
Standardized Tests: I take the PSAT this fall, and got a 27 on the ACT as a freshman
Extracurriculars:
Copy Editor of Newspaper
Founder and President of Tutoring Club for my grade
Head of Peer Leaders for my grade
Interact Club
Habitat for Humanity
Relay For Life
National Honor Society
Volunteer Worker at my local library
JV Soccer

So I guess that's what you need to know. Hopefully I can get more leadership positions in the next couple years and join more clubs and stuff.

Thanks guys!

You are on a good track so far for selective schools, but it’s just too early to be thinking about whether you’ll be a strong candidate for any particular school. Most people spend their freshman year trying a lot of clubs and activities and as time goes on they tend to focus their interests more narrowly. You are right to have a goal of deepening your involvement in the activites that matter to you outside the classroom. Be sure to keep up your grades and continue to take advantage of the most rigorous classes available to you. Spend time getting to know your teachers and letting them get to know you. Identify your strengths and passions and try to build on those, personally and academically. There are many, many great colleges and universities that will be available for your consideration when the time comes. Stanford may well be among them, but don’t narrow your dreams to just one or a few schools until you have a better understanding of who you are and what you want out of life.
