Chance an Asian for HYPSMC!

Hello, I:
- am a Korean rising senior studying in Vancouver, Canada.
- have permanent residence in the US, and my father is a diplomat so I've lived in many countries before, not to mention born in Argentina.
- have self-studied for all my SAT's and AP's (Canadian schools don't offer good courses, and tutors are quite expensive).

My plan is to major in biology, mathematics, or chemistry.
Please chance me for HYPSMC - except Harvard. I wrote H just for the acronym.
If you feel that they are impossibly high reaches, please tell me some match schools instead.

My stats are:

[[[[SAT]]]]]
(Reasoning: Oct 2011) - CR 750, W 780, M 790, Total 2320
(Reasoning: Oct 2012) - Goal 2350+
(Subject) Bio 740, MathII 800, Korean 800, Chem probably 800

[[[[[GPA]]]]
I think I make it into the top 5% (15/300). My school doesn't offer a GPA number. I'm taking all of the most challenging courses (I'm not bragging - my school just doesn't offer many courses).
(Soph) 92% avg.
(Junior) 94% avg.

[[[AP]]] 5 Biology
(2012) 5 Calculus BC, Chemistry, Psychology, English Language

[[[TOEFL]]] R 30, L 30, S 28, W 29, Total 117

[[[[EC]]]]
-school's Key Club: founder and executive since soph and President in senior year.
-volunteer: 100+ hours at the city's largest hospital.
-internship: lab assistant for a UBC zoology professor; 6 weeks this summer.
-school's annual Lunar New Year Celebration: started this tradition in 2010 with the help of the school board; have hosted and MC'd it twice (soph and junior year).
-Canadian Cancer Society event: team captain; recruited 10 people and fundraised $500.
-school's Leadership team: junior and senior years.
-school's Blood Drive: was in the planning team in junior, will lead the planning team in senior.

[[[[Awards]]]]
-National Math and Science Competition(from the Association of Korean-Canadian Scientists and Engineers): BC 2nd place as sophomore, BC 1st place as junior.

Thank you CC!

HYPSMC: Very high reach

20more: and match schools?
Thanks for being honest, I really don’t know a lot because I haven’t done a lot of research and am relatively new to CC.

It might be a reach… there’s nothing in your extracurriculars that makes you stand out. Good luck though!

Vanderbilt, Emory and Rice and some LACs.

Cornell maybe?

I’m actually applying because an acceptance into a prestigious US university almost guarantees acceptance in a Korean university (so I’m not that desperate, and am taking risks). I think LAC’s are great, but they aren’t very well-known in Korea. That’s why I’m considering “name value” here…

What about Berkeley, Cornell, Brown, UCLA?

Don’t let the above posters discourage you! You have a shot at all of the schools, no matter how large. If you truly would like to attend and consider yourself a good fit, there is absolutely no harm in applying. Good luck!

Sent from my DROID RAZR using CC

Great chances at UCB and UCLA.
Brown: reach

your SAT and SAT IIs are okay but it takes a lot more than numbers to get into “top 10” colleges.
your ECs are fairly weak and you don’t have any significant award and you are an Asian.

My honest opinion, if you apply to all “top 10” colleges, you MIGHT get into one or two if you have good essays and if you get lucky.

“Don’t let the above posters discourage you!”
I am not discouraging anybody. I am giving my honest opinion.

It’s not discouraging at all! I understand that my extracurriculars and awards don’t stand out much, and that HYPSMC are high reaches for… well, almost every student except a few exceptional keeners…
Honestly, I appreciate all of your replies :)

Btw, one of the reasons I don’t have significant awards is that I never took AMC or anything. My school didn’t offer them.

Apply to many top colleges then see what happen.
You might get lucky.

Thank you for your time, 20more! Wish me good luck!

… I wonder whether my Asian background will significantly affect my chances, when I’ve lived in Korea for less than half of my life.

bubump!

By the way… it really IS hard to get EC’s in Vancouver. To be very honest, I think I have the best EC’s in my school. I did everything that I could find (and started a few things myself) except MUN, for which I have no interest. Do you guys think the universities will understand these circumstances? :,(

I completely understand your situations with ECs, my school in Italy doesn’t offer them at all, but luckily there aren’t many Italians that apply to American universities and I’m not Asian (I have nothing with Asians! But Asian pool is the toughest probably!) so mine is almost a hook, and I found some uncommon ECs by my own. I suggest you to find something uncommon by your own, too, during this year; I mean something non-academic, but about which you’re passionate.

Anyway… I think your scores and GPA are great and that you don’t need to retake the SAT.
I think you have a shot because of your scores, your awards and your background, so just try in all of them and see. Just try to be yourself in the essays and remember that you’re quite an average Asian applicant, so pick up some safeties just in case!
Good luck!
