Chance an Average Kid

GPA - 3.15 Cumulative (upward trend, I had a bad freshman year, since then I always have at least a 3.5 semester gpa)

SAT - 660 Verbal, 660 Math, 650 Writing
ACT - 30

I go to a rigorous college prep school. It is ranked 45th in the country.

Extracurricular Activities - I played two seasons of Football, two seasons of Cross Country, 4 seasons of Wrestling (will be Captain Senior year), 4 seasons of Track & Field. I have been in 6 plays so far, and I will most likely be in 8 by the end of my high school career. (two plays per year). I have talent for it and I plan to continue with it in college. I am also part of Campus Republicans and the Alcohol Prevention Team (I'll explain this more in a little bit)

I wish to major in History and Theater. Like I said I have talent in theater, and I have had all As in history. I take tough classes and AP classes. I am going to write two very interesting essays for my application. One is about how I lost 105 lbs. and the other is about what I learned from my two week suspension.

I was suspended for two weeks during the second semester of my sophomore year. I got drunk with the wrestling team on a trip and had a seizure. We were all caught because of me. We were almost kicked out of school, but instead we were suspended for only two weeks. I have learned my lesson and to show my appreciation to the school I became a founding member of the Alcohol Prevention Team. Our mission is to promote a sober campus. I am now sober and I do not plan to touch alcohol for a long time.

I am a WASP from St. Louis, Missouri.

Schools I am looking at

Truman State University
Illinois Wesleyan University
Knox College
Beloit College
Lawrence University
Kalamazoo College
Kenyon College
Oberlin College
Denison University
Ohio Wesleyan University
Skidmore College
University of Denver

What are my chances? Thanks for the help.

Oh and the gpa is on a 4 point scale.

Come on won’t somebody chance me?

Really, am I that hopeless?

Oh my god! A normal kid post! Gah, these are great, better than all the private-school kids who’ve had every opportunity in their life who make affirmation topics/bragging topics.

In anycase, freshmen year isn’t counted as much, so your GPA should be fine if you had a 3.5+ every year otherwise.

And your scores are above normal.

You show a love of sports, which is good, do you think you are good enough to be recruited?

Skidmore, Oberlin, Lawrence, and Kenyon are reaches, I think you’ll get in everywhere else though. Apply to Kenyon anyway though, because it’s free!

The only sport I really like and am any good at is wrestling. Not very many schools have this sport though lol. Knox does, and Lawrence did (they just cut their program this year). If I choose Knox I would probably wrestle, but wrestling is not the be all end all.

Really? This is ridiculous.

Why won’t anybody chance me?

People on here tend to ignore those without 3.7 or higher. I would try to chance you but I am not familliar with many of the schools on your list.

I would guess you are into denver, however.

Okay, firstly, do not tell yourself you are average; you’re not. You are an above average student. Maybe on this forum you are below some of the number-crunching, eighteen-language-speaking machines that are on here, but you are above average. Also, if your school is that rigorous, your GPA will be viewed less harshly. I think all of your schools are within your grasp, the difference will be your essays and recs. If you can get good recs, and your essay topics seem good (especially the alcohol one), you should be fine. Again, you are not average!

Well, I know of one reason you might be being ignored. Those schools don’t get a lot of hype here on CC, so many students don’t know about them. I definitely don’t know anything about them. Plus, you self-identify as a WASP, which has an extremely negative connotation in my area. That’s definitely why I avoided this thread until now.

dreamsofivy thanks for being optimistic lol.

applicannot I am just trying to state the truth about myself. I am not a minority, I am a white Methodist man with English roots.

I don’t know much about those colleges, but you are a decent candidate. you have above average test scores and true interests. Actually the only college there I know even a little about is Illinois Wesleyan and you are above average for them.

Most people have a good idea about what it takes to get into a school like UC Berkeley. Not many people are up on the admissions stats for Kalamazoo College.

Since I brought up Kalamazoo: your SAT score is average for Kalamazoo, but your GPA is very low. Only 13% of Kalamazoo admits had below a 3.24 last year.

That’s why I said “in my area”. And, although I know what you mean, WASP = White Angle-Saxon PROTESTANT, lol. But I know what you mean. Unless methodists = protestants. In that case, whatever. Pastafarianism ftw.

Yes Methodist=Protestant

If you honestly didn’t know that Methodism is a Protestant movement, then you obviously know next to nothing about Christianity. How can you subscribe to a movement against Christianity without knowing anything about it?

Oh, wait… because it’s “cool”.

Anybody else want to weigh in?

I would love to be chanced!

I think you’re pretty good. It’s refreshing to have a normal kid around. I’m a soph in high school and you’re in good shape, kid. Just do good next year and next next year and you can go wherever you want! :]
