Chance An Average Student

What's up guys? I'm a High School Senior in an average Long Island Public School. I'm looking to probably major in either sports journalism or business.

My (weighted and unweighted) GPA for my first three years is 80.6 (my school does GPA out of 100), with a slight upward trend Junior Year.

I've never taken an AP or Honors class.

My SAT score is 1840.

My school doesn't rank.

I have pretty good and unique ECS:

4-year member of stock market club (Co-President senior year)

High School MBA

Financial Literacy

Job

3-year member of DECA (business club)

Founder and President of my own club

Featured Columnist at bleacherreport.com for parts of 3 years (it's the third most visited sports website on the internet, I've had articles featured on sportsillustrated.com, cracked.com, brobile.com, seattlepi.com, the Houston Chronicle, the San Francisco Gate and many more. I've also had 3 articles top 75k reads, 12 more top 25k reads, 16 more top 10k reads. I've had my article as the featured article on the site's front page 88 times. I also covered the 2011 NFL Draft for the website.)

I expect to have pretty good teacher recommendations and think I have a good essay.

Here are the schools I'm looking at right now in no particular order. I'm trying to narrow it down:

Syracuse
Temple
UMASS-Amherst
Hofstra
Pace
Iona
Seton Hall
Saint Joseph's (Philly)
Maryland
Indiana-Bloomington
Michigan State
St. John's
Rutgers
Rhode Island
American
Stony Brook

What do you think my chances are? Thanks in advance

I wonder how a 80.6/100 GPA would translate on a 4 scale…

I think it’s a 3.0, but I’m not 100% sure

bump .

I think your SAT gives you a good chance for Syracuse amd Stony Brook, and you should definitely get into St. Johns.

Temple has great regional alumni networks in both journalism and business. St. Joe’s probably has fewer in business, and the communications major is pretty new.

A friend’s son did journalism at North Carolina. His interest also was sportswriting.

Thanks for the info. Can anybody else weigh in here?

I’ll be the one to chance you in full. No chancer is perfect, we all make mistakes one day or another. You have solid ECs and I see that the ECs match your projected majors.

Syracuse: Match (ECs saving your skin here)
Temple: Low match (ECs outweigh OOS)
UMASS-Amherst: Safety
Hofstra: Safety
Pace: Safety
Iona: Safety
Seton Hall: Safety
Saint Joseph’s (Philly): Safety
Maryland: High match (I assumed a 80.6 GPA/100 was 3.0/4)
Indiana-Bloomington: Safety
Michigan State: Low match (Out of state playing against you)
St. John’s: Low match (not sure as to whether I’d put you as a “safety” status)
Rutgers: Low match (OOS playing against you)/Match (business)
Rhode Island: Safety (this is a school where subprime students can still have a safety status)
American: Match
Stony Brook: Low match

A whole lot of safeties you’ve got…

Thanks Catria, I really appreciate you chancing me for all of these. You really think all these schools are safeties for me with my low GPA and lack of AP/Honors? I thought a lot of these would be reaches if anything.

What better schools do you think I’d have a chance at then? Northeastern? BU? Any other suggestions?

By Maryland do you mean University of Maryland? If so it is a reach.

Yea, that’s the University of Maryland

But thank those ECs for those “safety” ratings…

Can good ECs really make up for low GPA that much?

In my opinion no. I don’t know enough about most of the schools on your list, but I can speak in a more general way about ECs. ECs are great to have, especially when they are strong, but the rarely if never compensate if the grades and test scores are not there. Unless you are off curing Cancer or something that incredible your ECs tend to not compensate if all other aspects are weak. I would say it tends to cause a slight shift in your chances, a high reach may become a low/mid reach, but it won’t suddenly become a match or safety.
