Chance an eager USC-loving Junior!

Hi everyone!

Here in New England, I hate the cold. I've started to research warmer schools...and USC has come to mind! I've looked at videos, opinions, and forums on it-it truly sounds like a wonderful school that I would love to be at.

Do I stand a chance?

GPA: 4.01 weighted
SAT: 2020 (640M/640CR/740W)
SAT subject tests-not sure, will get back tomorrow
Extracurriculars-newspaper editor, model UN delegate, some volunteer, etc.

I think my essays/recs will be GREAT.

Here's the kicker: my courseload rigor isn't phenomenal; I've taken 2 honors classes a year and will do 2 ap's and an honors class next year (senior year).
I've gotten all A+'s last semester, and probably will get A's again.

My grades/courses (first semester) junior year:

Precalc-A+
French honors-A+
chinese honors-a+
standard english a+
standard US hist. a+
(I should have taken an AP this year)

I would LOVE to get into USC, and believe that my stats are decent (my only downfall being my somewhat(?) okay course rigor).

So...am I a future trojan?

Thanks!

Any idea what you want to do?

Your weight GPA is a little low, so I’m assuming your high school doesn’t offer many APs or honors classes.

Do you go to a private high school?

Your SAT score is fine, but if you want, you can try raising it. Though, it should suffice, but if you want to get into an honors program or get scholarships specific to USC, try raising it. I can’t judge your SAT subject scores, yet.

Which major are you applying into?

You have a good chance of getting accepted. Good luck!

Whats your unweighted? Every school calculates weighted GPA differently so its pretty useless.

Retake your SAT, get it as high as possible.

Take those APs, they won’t hold it against you if your school only offers a few.

Hi everyone,

I believe that my unweighted GPA is a 3.98, but I’m not positive.

As I suggested in my post, my lack of AP’s is not because the school doesn’t offer a lot; in fact, they offer a good amount. However, while I should have chosen to take them, I simply didn’t. I realize this mistake and, as I said, will take some next year.

How much will this hurt me? How do they know what the school offers? Do I still stand a shot?

Thanks a lot!

Conversely, I think your gpa is more than enough. USC has a reputation for weighing SAT much more heavily than GPA, so long as you don’t have abysmal grades.

I think your SAT score is an actual weakness right now, as SAT scores at USC are rising extremely rapidly. USC superscores your SAT (takes all the highest scores from all your test sittings), which makes it much easier, but even so, the average score is around 2100 or so. You will need at least 2100, 2150+ to be safe since you aren’t taking AP’s this year, with the assumption that your extracurriculars are on par with other applicants.

Overall, you have a solid chance, but definitely, definitely write a killer essay. When I interviewed for my presidential scholarship, all three of my interviewers immediately told me my essay accounted for 50% of my being there, the other 50% being well roundedness, stats, etc. Good luck and you have a good shot.

Most GCs will provide a profile of the school, which includes a list of the AP classes offered at the school. If your school offers many and you have been taking some until senior year, this counts against the rigor of your schedule and your desire to stretch yourself with readily available courses. Recognize that some of your applicant competitors will have gone beyond to self study APs not offered at their school, or taken college level classes at a CC or on line to better themselves, which ups the rigor designation their GC will give them.

Not to get your hopes up too much but I’d say you’re very likely.
Show 'em you care, take tough classes senior year and do well, write good essays.
SAT scores are not as important to USC as GPA. Keep up your grades and take some APs. Work, son!

I only took two APs but my school only offered two. (I’m heading to being a sophomore in fall.)
2180 SAT… 3.98 GPA unweighted.
USC doesn’t take your HS freshman year into account, and they don’t care about weighted.
