chance an instater for UVA(top choice)...and a few other schools...please...

school of Arts and sciences....

SAT Verbal: 660
SAT Math: 730
SAT Writing: 760
SAT Total: 2150
SAT II: Chinese:770(not my native language, learned written Chinese in weekend Chinese school..so i'm actually quite proud of this score), Math2:670, USHistory:670
ACT: N/A
AP/IB taken/scores: the special program i'm in makes it really unrealistic to take AP courses until junior year(due to special curriculum that we must go by): Junior: AP US History(4), AP AB Calculus(4), Senior: US Government, Biology, Environmental Science, English Language, Economics, Statistics
GPA weighted: 4.49
GPA unweighted: 3.69
Rank or % estimate: unranked class

Subjective:
Essays: average??...pretty good??...their solid essays that show who I am..and my personality/passions...but nothing too special...so just evaluate based on the fact that they won't have a positive or negative effect on my admissions...

Teacher Recs: dunno...chose AP government teacher/debate coach...and AP English language teacher....have really high grades in both classes (i.e. Upper 90's)...and participate well in class...but then again...i won't see these recommendations...so we'll leave it at that...

Counselor Rec: She probably knows me more then she knows a lot of the other kids in my class...because shes my "mentor" for an online course I take...but again..i won't see her recommendation either...so...we'll leave it at that...

Hook (if any): i have no clue what constitutes as an actual hook nowadays since everyone has a billion different extracurriculars..but I was given an award for leadership by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation for my work at the Youth Conservation Corps...i'm a pretty good violin player(All-state level) and will definitely pursue in college...submitted tape and have contact with music faculty at several of the schools on my list including UVA...will help maybe??

Location/Person:
State or Country: Virginia
School Type: public magnet school (takes about 80-90 kids from around the county...we actually have 83 in our graduating class)
Ethnicity: Asian(Chinese)....probably the breaker...lol<<<..since most colleges are probably so sick and tired every asian applicant getting 2100+ on their SAT's...
Gender: m
Legacy Yes/No: no
Recruited Yes/No: no
Important ECs: a bunch of stuff...focuses on music, debate/model un and community service....few leadership positions..not really feel like listing them all...and none of them are hook-worthy... so just go ahead and assume that I have some pretty good extracurricular activities..but none of them hook material...

Other Factors: I go to this specialty school that supposedly colleges like(usually instate schools)...very rigorous course load...very competitive...my grades have had an upward trend...this year..with my loaded schedule...im getting 6 A/A+'s and 1 B+(in AP bio)..which can only help..so give me an idea of where i stand....i understand that college admissions is an inexact science...

Also Applying to:
James Madison University (backup???)
V-tech (backup???)
University of Richmond (Safe Match???)
Georgia Tech (Safe Match???)
College of William and Mary (Match???)
New York University (Match???)
University of Michigan (Match???)
Carnegie Mellon(Slight Reach???)
Emory University(Reach???)

I applied to so many schools..even though UVA's my definite top choice because of how ambiguous college admissions has become...I really don't want to end up going to a school where I'll be way above average with my stats....like...JMU..and not be challenged as much within my class while im there....if theres perhaps another great "second tier" match school out there that will take me(like...maybe...carnegie mellon or william and mary)...even though UVA won't...I really wish college admissions were as simple as they once were...you meet the admissions requirements for your top choice school..apply early decision...and have a nice holiday/rest of senior year...thinking of kids that get 1500+ SATs and straight A's that don't get into their top choices...is worrisome..oh well....

yea...your screwed...UVAs website clearly says...."1400 in, 1390 out,".... U.Va. Office of Admission > Frequently Asked Questions > Answers to Questions About Admission .....they care about the writing apparently..but i guess for this...they only use the math and critical reading....so yea...unless you can retake the SAT....you won't get in...no chance....uvas really stats oriented...you have a better chance at william and mary though...cause they won't reject you just cause you didn't reach 1400(especially..if its like your case...missing it by just 10 points)..but yea...UVA really values the magic 1400 number...as their website says...so don't even bother applying...at lot of schools the difference between a 1390 and a 1400 ...is even more significant than the difference between a 1300 and a 1390....they look at your score ranges...so if you score a 1390...no matter how close you are to a 1400..your still considered in the 1300s range...in which your chances for admissions are a lot lower then if you were seen as being in the 1400s range..which would be the case if you scored a 1400...so your chances at almost ALL schools are hurt by the fact that you didn't meet 1400...

All of the schools on your list are schools were most applicants break the very important 1400 barrier...so....
This is what i will predict...
James Madison University (good chance...but definitely not shoo-in)
V-tech (maybe in...but probably wait-list)
University of Richmond (wait-list)
Georgia Tech (wait-list)
College of William and Mary (wait-list...only cause ur instate)
New York University (reject..with the slim chance of wait-list)
University of Michigan (reject)
Carnegie Mellon(definite reject)
Emory University(yea..don't even bother applying)

...i think you should apply to some schools that have a majority of their applicants score below the 1400 range...like ...Virginia State University...Longwood University...Virginia Union University...or..i know this may be again...in the category of a slight reach...but Virginia Commonwealth University....you stand a much better chance at these schools..and they are more on your level...you will have more choices come april..if you revise your list to include more of these school..and less of the ones that you already have...

wow..that really stinks...i really hope your joking..because I already sent in my application...several of my friends from school are screwed too...cause they have like 1350-1400 range...wow...how can UVA be so arrogant....i guess since they accept scores from January..that i better sign up...so i can take the SATs again..and prey..that they get the scores in time..and ofcourse..that my scores actually go up 10 points....wow...just wow....i can't believe this...

"Setting an absolute minimum "1400 in, 1390 out," would be asking these tests to do something they weren't designed to do." He was joking as the website indicates above.

just the fact that they mention something like that shows that there is obviously an unofficial line between a score of 1390 and a 1400...if you have below a 1400...it is obviously significantly harder to get into college...because your considered in a complete different league then the kids in the 1400s...I still stand by what I say about cooldudes chances..and that he should see if he can apply to some more realistic schools...

yea cooldude...believe me...nuggetsfan is full of $h!t....if your instate...if theres even anything close to being an "SAT line"..it would be 1290 and 1300...and even that line....isn't close to existing...and yea...your stuff looks great...i actually think your being too pessimistic about your chances....many colleges tend to look at each section separately anyways...and don't' compare your total score to any range...and please don't anyone start crap about a 690 being a huge difference from a 700...cooldudes sat score will definitely be a plus for him at any school outside of the ivy league...and maybe a few others...a 2150 is SOLID as a rock..and can even get you into ivy league...if your other stuff are up to par...

As far as UVa...i'd say your sats are good..gpas pretty good...so are your extracurriculars...and on top of all that...your instate..so i'd say your in...so relax...i've seen many people with low-mid 1300's get in...and even a good amount with mid to high 1200 get in from instate...nuggetsfan again...wth??..

as for the rest of your schools
James Madison University (shoo-in)
V-tech (shoo-in)
University of Richmond (in)
Georgia Tech (most likely in)
College of William and Mary (most likely in)
New York University (most likely in)
University of Michigan (most likely in)
Carnegie Mellon(solid match...especially if not CIT or Tepper)
Emory University(solid match)

i don't see how anyone could argue the fact that by reaching 1400...you are making a big step...and distinguishing yourself from the people who scored 1380's and 1390's...and colleges take that very seriously in admissions

cooldude,
So all your senior courses are at an AP level? Can you estimate your rank? I'm sure you have some clue as to where you are in your fairly small class.
You might have a shot at UVA, but without rank it is very hard to say. Rank is probably the single most important piece of information about candidates because it shows how competitive you are in relation to your classmates. Also, on a different note, you are fairly luke warm about your own essays. I hope you are just being humble, because, essays are vital to your chances at UVA. Again, I'm not sure if you are being humble about your EC's, but you state that you haven't held many hook-worthy leadership positions .
Your humility, if conveyed on your application, may doom you.
Your SAT's are fine, and your GPA seems fine too-but without rank, your GPA doesn't mean a lot, IMO.
You've PROBABLY got a shot at UVA and W & M, but they are reaches. You might get WL at one or the other. It hinges on your rank, and the quality of your essays and LOR's?
You are an "in" at JMU, VT, Richmond, and NYU.
Reject at MI, CMU.
I don't know enough about Emory.

wow...im not feelin the mixed reviews here...lol...one says im good..one says I have a reach shot at UVA and wm...instate...jeeeeze...and yes im takin all AP's senior year except orchestra...uhh...rank....it seriously doesn't make sense to rank our class...think of it this way....12 high schools in the county....83 kids selected from across the county for our specialty school...meaning the kid who would be ranked 83....still had to get into this program...and if attending his regular public high school..would probably rank easily in the top 10%...think of our program like a watered down version of TJ high school...i mean..the kid who has the lowest GPA at TJ is still a really good student..anyways...just think of my GPA as it is....a 3.7 unweighted ...is a 3.7 unweighted...a B+/A- average....and the fact that I earned it with a tough high school program..should make it look even better then a 3.7 at a normal public high school..due to class rigor. My humility...ok....just cause I don't feel like posting my whole activities sheet on college confidential..doesn't mean anything...i would actually say my extracurriculars are very strong...but in what way are basic leadership positions "hook-worthy"....hooks are like...intel or siemens westinghouse science competition finalist...or like...I am a four or five star football recruit...i don't think being concertmaster of my school orchestra or officer of my french club...are hooks by any means...too many kids have these...

this chance thread is very..hmm..interesting..you have a complete retard who is obviously joking..nuggetsfan...but then another person who seems like he might be slightly sarcastic...but being serious...powerderpuff...yea...cooldude..i feel bad for you man...but ur a baller...your stats are solid...i really don't see how you wouldn't get into UVA instate...but yea...essays are important..but from what you say..your essays are probably fine...and your extracurriculars...dude...All-state orchestra...Leadership award from the state department of conservation and recreation??...yea...i really hope powderpuff was being sarcastic...or else I will know a lot of people who will be upset this spring....and far as your list go's...i really don't think any of them are reaches..and that you may not get into ALL of them...but will definitely get into most of them....so good luck..and take these chance threads..including my post...with a grain of salt..obviously..considering ur getting posters like nuggetsfan...who are just screwin with you...

you are in easy at UVirginia

I'd say you have a very good chance!

your golden...colleges admissions=no guarantee's....but UVA for you is lookin alot like the superbowl for the patriots this year...clearly something I wouldn't wanna put my money on..due to the fact that...based on the odds..i probably wouldn't win much money if you got in...haha...anyways...enjoy your senior year...it only happens once...

Being in-state is going to help, but no one knows for sure.

And nuggetsfan69 quoted that site out of context. UVA does not set minimums.

I take it back cooldude. Sorry if I made you nervous. Now that I know that you are taking all AP's senior year and doing well at a competitve school IS school, that has help to sway me in a positive direction. Also, I truly believe you were being humble and a little bit cryptic with your essay explanation. For someone as smart as you are, I'm sure you weren't careless with your essays or your LOR's.
I'd say you've got a very good chance at UVA and W&M as long as your essays are unique and well written. For the record, not everyone is concert master of their orchestra, learns Chinese in their spare time, and wins awards from the State of VA for conservation efforts. There are 3 hooks right there!!
Best of luck to you.
And, as long as you weren't humble on your MI, CMU, and EMORY applications, you'll probably get in there too! Sorry for the initial scare.

It seems to me that your college list consists of safeties and matches. Why not apply to a few reaches, too? And remember that it's not too late to sign up for the January SATS (albeit late registration). If you pull your CR score up a bit, you'll be in the running at any school in the country.

CD-
I think your stats and personal achievements are most impressive! Your list of universities is very well suited to you as an overall individual. I, too, feel that you have a strong chance of getting in at each of the schools on your list.
I don't think any of the schools are reaches for you. Are you applying to any "reach" schools? Mine was Harvard, and I didn't get in, but that was no surprise to me and I wanted to be at UVA anyway!

thanks guys..and yea....i would have applied to some "reach" schools...if it weren't for my 3.7 uw gpa...for some reason I feel that there are enough kids with 4.0's and similar if not higher sat scores around..that my GPa will put me out of the running at most top tier colleges....seems like...nowadays...B's are the C's of 20 years ago...

Lots of those admitted to the most selective schools have a 3.7 unweighted GPA. And many with perfect transcripts get rejected. You might as well give it a shot-- what have you got to lose?

ur fine
dont worry
r u in that mag school in richmond?
