hooks/unusual circumstances :
-I've moved to several schools and I viewed it as quite challenging
-The project/initiatives I've done with my Leo club. We put ssome boxes in spectacle shops around singapore to collect used glasses which then will be recycled and donated overseas. In thsi intitiatives we had some support from one of the polytechnics in singapore and one of the biggest chain of spectacles shops in singapore.
-I have witnessed the riots when I was in Indonesia and became a refugee.

Well, that's a glimpse about me and I am really sorry for my grammar. I'm not a good story teller/writer either;I'm sure you can see that hahahaha I just hope it's gonna cause a problem in making my essay.

Schools I'm gonna apply

Without FA

-UCLA
-UCSD
-UCB

With FA

-Harvard
-Amherst
-Williams
-Dartmouth
-Columbia
-uPenn
-Cornell
-NYUAD
-Oberlin
-colgate
-Middlebury
-Berea
-PSU

I'll really appreciate it if you can give me the probability to get into those schools. And, say that you were in my position and had to choose only 3 schools to apply from those w/out FA list, which schools u are gonna pick ?? I ask this cz applying to too many schools is just too expensive and being from a country with terrible exchange rate, it becomes really close to impossibility. :)

bumps !
Anyone could chance me :frowning: ??

You have good ECs, but you need to be sure to tie everything together when you submit your application. You really need to highlight your passion/s.

Hi happy person !
thanks for your reply…
How can I tie everything in ? Resume ?

Also, could you tell me which schools are high reach, low reach, and match ???

Harvard-high reach
-Amherst-mid reach
-Dartmouth-low reach
-Columbia-low reach
-uPenn-high match
-Cornell-low match
-colgate-safety
-PSU-safety

Hey curious : thanks for your post ! it’s really encouraging…

Just one more question :
if safety = 99% of admission
then
low match = ? %
low reach = ? %

thanks dude !

Colgate is far from a safety for an international seeking aid with this profile. It wouldn’t be safe for a fully pay American. The list above is dangerously untrue!

The 3 I’d choose would be Colgate, Oberlin and PSU.

Hi waverly !
That’s a great information.

hmm… so even among those 3, there’s no safety at all ??

bumps 10char…

You’re a really strong applicant; you have to be as an international student. Decent test scores, but probably your weak point.

UC’s- should be an admit (I don’t know how much aid you would get)

-Harvard, Amherst, Williams= high reaches
-Dartmouth, UPenn, NYUAD= mid reaches
-Columbia (they accept alot of international students)=low reach
-Cornell, Middlebury= high match
-Oberlin, Colgate= match
-PSU= safety

Ivy admissions are tricky. Don’t be surprised if you get into one school, but not another very similar one.

I read some f these and just sigh. Columbia low reach and Dartmouth/Penn mid reach? Where to start?

In the last two years Columbia has accepted a lower percentage than Dartmouth (by just a little) or Penn (by a lot). The OPs scores are below average for all 3, so by definition they would all be high reaches.

Please kids, please. Read the common data sets before posting rubbish!

Sorry patpat, I wish you all the best.

I really don’t see you having much of a chance at any of the Ivies, your SAT isn’t high enough but being a international student may help and so does the refugee thing.

waverly : thanks… Do you know where to get the admission rate for international students in these Unis ??

I find the admission rate for whole application pool quite misleading for international applicant.
Assuming that I’ll apply those 3 schools u have recommended, could you pick me an ivy in which I have the best chance compared to the others ??

@waverly : Sorry I forgot to give you the back ground of the tupes of applicant coming from my country… Most of them would either be an Olympiads winner at the national or international level, or an International school students…

And there’re only few students applying to HYP+IVYs from Indonesia… last year… only 15 applying to princeton… for the LACs, I cant expect to see 0 applicant… seriously, we dont know so much about American Unis except the famous ones like HYPS UCs etc
For the SATs… you can’t expect a stellar scores from indonesian student…
Most of the Indonesian Ivy leaguers I’ve contacted only have 2000+ SAT score, with no EC, but just International Science Olympiads medals…
I don’t reach the international level Biology Olympiad, but I’m among the few (if not the only one) who won both National Biology Olympiad and Indonesian school debating championship… first is taken mostly by science stream students and the latter by the social stream students… so I’ve won both… :)

Yes, my SAT’s “out of the league” but please dont forget my A level : it’s equivalent of APs and it’s even far harder…

my thoughts…don’t try to justify yourself to anyone on CC just go with your gut feeling and apply.
I really don’t have time to explain why I’m telling you this but in short, i’m in a very very similar situation; incredible ECs, decent, over 2000 but not stellar SATs, awesome A-levels…after speaking to well-informed individuals from ivy league ad-coms what they said was that they do endeavor to evaluate “you for you” they take your individual circumstances into consideration. soooooo NE T’INQUIETE PAS do what feels right to you!

@lalachia : Merci ! Oui, peut-etre j m’inquiete bcp… :frowning: mais c’est ma natur…
But as I said, I’m not a good story teller/writer, so I’m afraid I can’t expect to demonstrate those individual circumstances in my essays…

But thanks for your advice ! Vous devez etre une/un etudiant(e) excellent(e) !

Hm… are you a singapore JC students ?? You seem to be well informed…

no i’m not from singapore…not even from Asia lol but I am an international student though

Hmm…
Lemme’ guess… pakistani ??

Oops… not from Asia…
UK ??

the only advice I have is to maybe get your SATs up a little bit! Other than that, you look pretty strong.

UCs: low - mid match
-Harvard, Amherst, Upenn, Dartmouth, Columbia: mid - high reach
-NYUAD: low reach
-Cornell: low - mid reach

  • Middlebury, Oberlin, Colgate: mid - high match
    -PSU: safety
