Hello there, Im an out-of-state student (attending a community college) whos interested in UVA. My overall high school grades werent very good (just below a 3.0 average), and my SAT scores were horrible. As of now, I have 28 college credits, and will continue going to community college for one more year so hopefully Ill have at least 45 credits by the time I apply. As of now, I have a 3.71 GPA, and hopefully I can make that go up by the end of the fall semester.

Am I a strong candidate?

Well thats not nearly enough info to go on... but i would say not at all, judging by the fact that people with almost 4.0's got rejected as OOS transfers, and thats all the info you have given us to go on.

That's what I figured. It's funny, because their website says that they'll review applicants with 2.0 GPAs. I hate when colleges say that. It's almost as if they do that so that more people apply (thus, more money for them via application fees). It's always about money. Why can't they just be truthful and say that candidates should have a 3.5 at least? It's pretty immature of a college to say that they take people with GPAs below 2.5, when in actuallity 4.0 students have a hard time getting in.

That said, I doubt the fact that I'm Middle-Eastern helps.

Aside from that, I play the guitar, and I'm in a few clubs, however nothing that stands out.

My major is Political Science/International Affairs. Am I still considered a deadbeat, laughable transfer applicant?

Colleges don't like setting lower limits on grades or scores because they want to be able to consider more people. Perhaps someone with a 2.7 from Caltech would get in, while someone with a 3.4 from George Mason wouldn't.

It's not about money - UVA has plenty of it. The funds raised application fees don't amount to much.

That's understandable, for sure. Should I bother applying as a Political Science major? I mean, there's always a slight chance, right?

It just seems to me that many of my options are being closed because of my average high school performance.

Of course you should apply. As always, uva puts a ton of emphasis on essays, so write write and rewrite. and then do it again. make yourself seem like your something uva doesnt already have and you may have a shot. maybe.
