My daughter is very interested in Miami, but I don't think her stats are good enough. I would like some second opinions...
GPA, unweighted 3.2
Act 23
Varsity tennis - 3 years
Lots of volunteer hours
Thanks

Is there time for her to retake the ACT or try the SAT? It really depends on how competitve her high school is. Son’s extremely competitve prep school has had students admitted to Miami with GPAs in the same range, but their tests scores were a bit higher (1150-1300). Average acceptance from the school is GPA 84% with 1226 SAT.

My son was an out of state (California) applicant last year. His stats were very much the same and he was omitted. Parents and Grandparents(alumni) first pick, he eventually decided on another East Coast school that he felt was a better fit. You will be out the application money if she’s not accepted, but I looked at it as a small price to pay, so that you are not left wondering later in life what if. This way she’ll know if she’s in or not.

Cali – being OS and a legacy no doubt helped your son gain admittance. Rumandting’s D should apply even if it seems like a reach, lots of factors go into these decisions.

You are right that she should apply even if it is a stretch. My apply or you will never know and you will only lose the application fee statement was to suggest play all your cards so you won’t wonder what if. You however said it much better than I, Thanks! P.S. I think it was my sons fathers Latino ancestory that made them court him with the visit to the campus and the scholarships. You never know what they are looking for to round out their pool of acceptances.

My daughter is also an OOS student applying Early Decision to Miami.

-GPA: 3.2
-ACT: 24
-SAT: 540 Math, 630 CR, and 630 Writing (1800)
-She has taken a very rigorous course load with 5 AP classes, 1 IB class, and 2 Advanced College Project classes through dual credit with Indiana University
-She goes to a very competitive high school of 4,500 students
-She is in the school’s top choir, has numerous state, sectional, and regional awards for her performance on the Speech Team, she holds 2 leadership positions in different volunteer groups at her school, and has been a member of our state’s honor choir for 9 years

Her stats might put her on the bubble but we’re really hoping applying Early Decision will make her stand out along with her incredible extra curricular activities.

What do you all think? She’s just in love with Miami and I’d hate to see her heart get broken!

I know that you feel that her stats make Miami a stretch school for admissions, but I believe especially as an OSS that Universities are looking for diversity in many forms. My son didn’t have the most stellar grades or SAT but was an OSS, had lots of volunteering, and worked throughout high school. He pitched in his essays what he would bring to the school if they accepted him. He was accepted at all but one school. I think if she plays up what is unique about her and what she has to offer to other students and the school she should have a good chance

rumandting,

Miami University chances for GPA 3.2, Act 23… possible but slim(>5%) chance - unless minority/diversity student - OOS is in her favor, but female will count against her, MU looking to increase % males.

Same classes, many of the same teachers, 8 credits summer, 12 credits fall,
in with ‘the crowd’ freshman yr / 2nd semester

gojack, I looked at your post and the underlying stats. For someone only recently looking seiously into Miami, those ACT and GPA stats are astonishingly and dauntingly high. So are the numbers of admissions from the EA pool. Do you know if those GPA figures weighted or unweighted?

mhc48,

“MU average GPA 4.2 (using 4.0 scale)” so MUST be weighted GPA

I very much appreciate all the replies. I mistakenly thought Miami’s OOS tuition was around $30,000 a year. After now seeing that it is over $40,000, it’s really a moot point on whether she could get in or not!

Ahem. That is not Miami University; that is University of Miami (Florida).

Well, gojack, my D has already applied, so I guess I’ll see how her stats stack up. For the record she’s OOS, goes to a dual curriculum religious private school and has a 3.4 secular course GPA with a 27 ACT. Good ECs.

rumtandting, on the school’s site it has 2009-10 tuition for OOS at $26,202, Room & board $9,458, for at total of $36, 128. Are you saying that’s close enough to $40k for you or that there has been a large increase announced? It’s still a significant amount less than I’m paying OOS for my son at U Mich.

mhc48,

OOS WGPA 3.4 and ACT 27 - much better odds than a 23 ACT

Thanks gojack. Actually, it’s unweighted.

But I wasn’t relating my comments just to rumandting’s D, but rather in general, the numbers for Miami are higher than I thought.

My post seems to be invisible, but the numbers for “Miami” are higher than expected because gojack posted stats from the wrong Miami.

Miami University = muohio.edu = Ohio.
University of Miami = miami.edu = Florida.

Here is the actual breakdown for Miami University’s first-year profile (from the class that entered in 2009): [First-Year Class Profile](Admission and Aid | Miami University)

aussiek, I saw your prior post, but due to its position right under rumandting’s thought you were saying that the $40k tuiton costs were UMiami’s.

The academic numbers you post are more in line with what I had understood, but it is still interesting that 42% of the Class of 2010 had ACT scores over 29.

<a href=“Page Not Found on the Users, Units, or Orgs Server | Miami University”>Page Not Found on the Users, Units, or Orgs Server | Miami University;

No, only 25% of the class had ACT scores of 29 or higher. 8% scored a 29. 17% scored a 30 or higher.

Ah, well then they and you took real math, calculus or statistics courses in college, unlike me. Back in the '60s all I foolishly thought I needed to know was how to read poetry and convert grams and ounces into dollars.

“convert grams and ounces into dollars”…

lol; were you a drug dealer in college? see where my head is…just kidding, btw
