D and S are both interested in Miami for different reasons. However, S has stronger test scores than D, and is a candidate to apply to most "lottery" schools. UW GPAs are close, although S also has slightly more rigorous classes. I believe that S actually could be in the running for some nice merit $ from Miami. But, if both kids apply, will his application hurt D's chances of getting in? Her test scores do put her in the mid-50% range at Miami, but on the lower end, while his are above. My concern is that D is very interested in Miami's Frost SoM and due to music, there are fewer places that are a good "fit" for her than there are for him and I think it would be devastating for him to get accepted if she does not. Except for Miami, they are looking at totally different schools...

OP, could your daughter apply ED to Miami if she likes it so much?

No, don’t want to do ED… we need to see financial aid packages before we’ll make any decisions…

EA is also a good option and will not hurt her acceptance chance. It does not matter that they are both applying but GPA and ACT are important. My niece and my son applied this year. My niece with a lower than a 28 ACT got wait listed ( got accepted for Spring but comes from a very known HS and has a good GPA) For merit: ACT above 31preferable above 32. And at least an A- GPA.

Why do you think they are competing for a spot. It’s not like he will take the spot away from her. Sounds like your daughter knows her brother has a better chance of acceptance based on stats. With different majors, other factors will play a part. Let them both apply and see what happens. Unless your son also wants Frost, your daughter is not competing with your son anyway.

Good luck. U Mom here. Great school!!

crazed…I am concerned because I know some schools look to fill geographic quotas, so I would assume they would take the stronger student only…and you can’t get more geographically close than the same house!

ddahwan, thanks for that info. DD does have above a 28 and a 3.97 UW. DS is above a 32 and has a higher GPA…

Both should be ok. Go to www.miami.edu and they will tell you their requirement for merit. If your DD GPA is on a 4.0 scale then she is in the right track. They pay a lot of attention at the ACT score though. If you are really looking for merit money for DD see if she can take it again( maybe after some practice) in September and see if she can get closer to DS ACT. Do not worry about geographical location. UMiami is giving a lot of merit money to bright students across the US. They really are investing in their student body so every year those admission grades and merit grades keep being raised.
