Chance an upcoming senior on my school picks

In for sure at NYU, UCSD, Davis, and Poly. Berkeley seems like a good match. LA, Berkeley, and Pomona are all matches. Stanford and Columbia are within reach, but all three of the top schools will have some luck factor. You definitely fit into the competetive applicant pool though. I would for sure stick with the ACT scores, as they are better overall in every category.

Okay, I’m sorry, but Stanford, Brown, and Columbia are definitely not high matches/low reaches for anyone except maybe a dozen uber-elite kids. Also, are you able to hide your SAT score since you’re sending your SAT Subject Tests anyway? Cuz I’m in a similar situation.

Stanford Reach
Berkeley Match
Pomona Reach (lower than Ivies, but still not a match)
Brown Higher reach
Columbia Reach
NYU Match
UCLA Match
UCSD Lower match/Safety
UC-D Low, low match/Safety
Cal Poly SLO Safety for sure

not quite sure what you mean by this. basically, im sending my sat2s to the UCs, stanford, and columbia. im sending my act everywhere, and i already sent my sat to stanford, so i guess im stuck there. anyways, thanks for the chance

Stanford - Reach
Berkeley - Match /Low Reach
Pomona - Low Reach
Brown - Low Reach
Columbia - Reach
NYU - Match
UCLA - Match/Low Reach
UCSD - Match
UCD - Safety
Cal Poly SLO - Safety

Thanks for chancing! :D

Now:

Stanford - Definitely a reach, but there’s no saying what might happen. Also, Stanford is a legacy school, so it ups your chances.
Berkeley - Definitely reach if you’re not from Cali. But if you’re OOS and you don’t apply for financial aid, it depends, since those schools need the money nowadays.
Pomona - Reach/high match.
Brown - Reach
Columbia - Reach
NYU - Match/low match.
UCLA - Same as Berkeley.

Never heard of the other three!

Also, I think you might need some safeties, if that’s not what the other three are.

Yea thats what te other three are. I am from CA, so most of my safeties are the CA public schools like UC Davis, UC San Diego, and Cal Poly

Stanford- low reach(good odds tho)
Berkeley- match
Pomona- match
Brown- low reach
Columbia- low reach
NYU- high match
UCLA- match
UCSD-your in
UCD -your in
Cal Poly SLO- your in

you’re in everywhere except stanford, brown, columbia and pomona where i think you will get at least into one of them if not more, they’re all reaches though.

thanks for the chances, guys. i really do hope i get into one of those reaches, anonymous

Theres a high possibilty for all of them, especially the UC’s

Great news, thanks

To be honest I think people have been a little generous with the Stanford love.

I had a 4.8 W GPA, 9 AP’s, 36 ACT, 2350 SAT I, 3 SAT II 800’s, + really good extra cirriculars (state/national level positions in extracurricular clubs like JSA and Red Cross), 4 Varsity sports (including captain of one), and research in 3 different subjects.

I got into Harvard, Wharton, and Cornell, Cal, and MIT-- and got rejected from Stanford. There were also people who I think were more qualified than myself from my school who got rejected.

Not to say you’re not a good candidate or that you’re not impressive, but Stanford, MIT, and the Ivies are all ridiculous crap-shoots.

I would say that Pomona, Brown, Columbia, and Stanford are all reaches for you; however I think outside of a 4.0UW, 2400, and HIV and/or cancer research, they’re reaches for anyone.

You have better chances than the average person for all of these, but those chances still hover around 10-20%.

If you really are interested in one of those, I would highly, highly, HIGHLY recommend applying early to one.

As for the rest, I would say you’re a lock for all of them (including Cal, they only care about numbers, which you have). However UCLA I would give you an 80/20 chance, just because they can be really weird sometimes (I’ve had multiple friends with over 3.7’s and 2250’s get rejected).

Good luck!

Stanford-low reach
Berkeley- match
Pomona-match
Brown-reach
Columbia-reach
NYU-match
UCLA-in
UCSD-in
UCD-in
CPSLO-in

Alright roneald, I really appreciate the reality check. I am suspicious to apply early to Stanford because of the crazy strong applicant pool, and my other reaches only have ed so I don’t want to apply early there. A couple quick things, I heard legacies have a 25% acceptance rate at Stanford so wouldn’t I at least have that chance? Also I didn’t put it down, but I am part Mexican(urm) and I hope that will help. Lastly, my school traditionally gets 2-3 acceptees a year, and my year doesn’t have any crazy qualified applicants. I personally know the top 15 or so students in my year and honestly I think I am the most well rounded strongest candidate for top schools. I am surprised to see tons of ccers with crazy internships, and NO ONE has any thing like that at my school, yet we get some to top schools every year. In conclusion, I am not trying to defend my case, I am just wondering if this would change my chances at Stanford. Seriously though, I am more than happy with a 10-20%!thanks for the chances everyone

Xargon42: I apologize if I sounded demeaning or even pessimistic in my response. I did not mean to demean you, but rather, as you stated, provide you with a reality check.

The simple matter is that (at least in my opinion), Stanford is one of the most selective schools in the country, and it is a reach for every single applicant.

As far as URM status goes, that will carry you a VERY long way. That is EXTREMELY significant. Also, your legacy status will be helpful as well. At the end of the day however, you’re still looking at less than a 30-35% chance, and that is being HIGHLY generous.

I in no ways consider myself to be under qualified. I hold myself in a very high esteem and soundly believe I belong near the top of this nations college youth. That being said I am a realist, and in predicting my own college chances at Stanford I gave myself a 12% chance at Stanford-- and I felt I was being biased in a positive way.

As far as EA goes, it is true that the pool is more rigorous and the acceptance rates are similar, but from experience I have seen that many students who apply EA and are qualified will often be deferred to the normal admission pool (although remember your application will be revisited at the end of this cycle).

If you have any more questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me or re-post.

Alright cool. Reonald I didn’t think you were demeaning in any way, in fact I liked the honesty. Congrats on harvard and MIT and wharton btw. I have some serious considering to do about when I will apply to Stanford. If you think I stand a better shot at ea, please let me know. You seem to be very knowleadgeable and I would love to hear your opinion on this.

Hahaha I just find it funny that out of the schools you congratulating me on, you failed to mention the one school I actually ended up attending  (Cornell)

I think with a mixture of legacy and URM status, your best bet would be indeed to apply EA to Stanford. However I do think this is a decision you should reach after consulting with your school counselors as well.

Best of luck to you!

Lol I couldn’t remember what the last school was that you got into, but I was typing from my iPod and couldn’t scroll up to check. Congrats on gettin into cornell. I’ll be sure to talk to my counselor.

Any other opinions? Should I do Stanford scea?

Bump(sorry) off of front page
