Chance at UCLA

Well, junior year is done, and my tepid performance may hurt me.

UC UW GPA: ~3.6-3.5, depends on if you count some Community college classes I took for fun

UC Uncapped W GPA: 4.4

AP scores:

Bio: 5
Euro: 5
US: 4
Physics B: 4
Eng comp: 4
Music Theory: 4

And here's the bad:

Calculus: 2 (i am considering deleting the score, and taking calc at the comm. college this fall)

My UW GPA is low because I got 7 B's this year. I was in 4 AP classes and an honors class though, and did a sport (varsity volleyball).

SAT Math II: 750 (Didn't study, I want to retake it..)
SAT I: 2080 (I didn't prepare at all, plan to retake, got an 8 on my essay)

EC: I play piano, and have won a few competitions and a scholarship. I did panel for certificate of merit. I got perfect marks sophomore year, in piano. I also do taekwondo, and have a black belt. I have done both of those all four years of high school. Finally, I am in NHS, FBLA, and CSF--although I heard those really don't mean anything at all, unless you're an officer, which I am not.

I volunteer at a hospital anywhere from 2 to 4 hours a week, in the emergency room. I have also been playing piano at a local assisted living home.

Strengths:

W UC GPA of 4.4

I will have over 40 semesters of honors/AP/college classes, twice the average of admitted students (20).

I am ELC, ranked 4 in my class.

I live close to UCLA.

So, in all, I feel my only weakness is my relatively low UW GPA.

Right now, I am taking General Chemistry II, the one after AP, at a local community college, and aspire for an A. I took chem I (AP equivalent) at the community college last summer and got an A. I feel having a year of general chemistry will show something. My parents' income is high though (Bush's tax cuts affected us)

So, I plan on getting an A in Chem II, and drastically improving my SAT scores, to increase my chances of admission. So, if I get a 2300 on the SAT, does it look good for UCLA, and will it cancel out my horrid grades junior year?

THANKS!

Did you include freshman year in your UC gpa? Cause if you took 40 semesters, thats ~20 classes equaling ~10 per year and you said you took 4 APs and an honors class.

UC gpa does not include freshman year. If you didn't include it, then disregard this post.

Oh yeah, and I am taking 5 AP classes and 2 community college classes this year:

English 12 AP
Spanish 4 AP
Statistics AP
Econ/Gov AP
Psychology AP

CC:

Calc I
Microecon

And I plan on doing well in those classes, if at all it will affect my chances. Would a 5.0 sway UCLA if I were "borderline", if it was 1st semester of senior year? Thanks!

Eh, I included algebra 2 honors and geometry at the college, freshman year.

I meant semesters of honors/AP/college classes that I took or will have taken from grades 10-12.

If you want to know that, the exact number is still around 40, since I forgot the CC classes I am planning on taking next year.

=]

You don't send a midyear report unless they request for it and due to the sheer number of freshman applications (it was ~57,000 last year + transfer applications) they just don't have the time and manpower to evaluate a midyear from everyone.

Also, you need 2 SAT IIs.

Get that SAT score up as high as possible and you have a decent chance.

to be honest, if you have good ECs and your personality shines through your essays, i would not be worried. i had mediocre AP scores-- my highest was a 4 and my lowest was a 2. my SATs were mediocre as well, but my ACT was fairly good. i had a 3.89 weighted GPA and was ranked 60 out of 600 in my class. i was that laid back girl who didn't really care if I got two semester D's in chemistry and math. i was good at what i was good at, which was english. also my ECs were band and forensics for all four years. that's what got me admitted to ucla i believe.

Thanks for the input! What I am worried about is the fact that UCLA is obviously the most popular school on this website, and in reality too, and by basic supply/demand, the price goes up, so I would therefore need more to offer.

But yeah, I only want to go to a UC school, and from what I've heard of Triton Eye at UCSD...it only makes me want to go to UCLA even more (I'm not serious, the reason I want to go to UCLA is because my parents would get rid of my dog if I couldn't come back on the weekends. I love my dog.)

Now, I need to work on that personality!
