chances for UCs?

Well, here it is:
3.83 UC GPA
700 Math IIC (will retake) 680 USH 660 Physics (will retake)
I will take the SAT I (what score should I aim for if I want to get into UCLA?)
If extracurriculars count at all:
- piano 8 yrs
- symphonic band 4 years
- XC and track 4 years
- chess club 4 yrs; also chess champion my junior year
- AP scholar (took 3 so far)
- 150 + hrs volunteering at the local hospital in my town

If race matters at all: filipino and asian (might not help; my last name is Wong; Jack Coltrain is my videogame name, very random)

Also, any tips to improve my chances into getting into UCLA or Berkeley? I probably don't stand much of a chance, but I want to see other opinions. Thanks for helping me out.

U need a really high score on SAT because your UCGPA is low for CAL/UCLA

Look at it this way.

The average UC GPA at UCLA is 4.12 or so (someone said 4.15 this year). Your UC GPA is around 3.83.

The difference is approximately .3

Consider that 300 points--which is how many you have to make up.

Since the average UCLA SAT I score is 2000 and the SAT IIs are likely 660/660, this is a total of 3320. Therefore your total for your SAT I and SAT IIs has to come up to around 3620. Divide by 5 and your average score needs to be around 724 on each and every section of the SAT I and SAT IIs. This total can be less if you took a lot of honors courses (more than 6)--and will need to be more if you took fewer than 6 AP/IB honor courses.

(This assumes of course that your ECs are equal to that of the average UCLA admittee--yours are about average.)

Good luck.

well, I better start hitting the books

ok, i just found out that my UC GPA, rounded up, is 3.8!!! because PE doesnt count!!!! will this greatly affect my chances? how high should all my standardized scores be to have a good chance?

anyone? help

Ok, first of all, you still have a chance, just not as great. You should retake your SAT IIs to get at least 750+ on both of them, and aim for at least 2100+ preferably a 2200ish on the SAT. Also, what is your intended major? If you're unsure about if you can get in, you should stick to C of L&S majors.

And lastly, remember that an average is just that; an average. Do you know how many people take Berkeley and LA as safety schools? People who have 4.5 UC GPAs and such? Clearly people still get in with your stats. If it's any consolation, a girl on the UCLA c/o 2011 Facebook group had a 3.0~ UC GPA and still got in (she wasn't an URM), so don't just give up.

thanks a lot for the inspiration; i have been very dedicated to education after learning responsibility by taking care of my baby sister and becoming more mature, hanging out with a group of astute people. hopefully my dedication will lead me to success.

if accepted into UCLA, I plan to major in biz econ
