Hi, first of all thanks to anyone who replies!

I'm US born but I did all of my high school in Australia. As such I don't have GPA, per se. All my courses are all AP or honors or whatever it's called in America - ie. they're tough courses.

English
English Extension 1
Math

Chemistry
Physics
Economics

My grades were terrible relative to everyone in my school, but I went to an academically competitive private school whose students were all in the top 15% in the country. I was on a full scholarship based on academic merit. The final exam that we take in Australia puts me in the 85th percentile in the country.

SAT - 730/710/600
SAT2 - MathII/Phys/Lit - haven't done yet but expecting 700+ for all.

Based on what I've seen from others, my essays are fantastic. I also have a knack / passion for design and computers and pride myself on my analytical ability.

Decent involvement in sport (volleyball), drama productions, music, clubs. Nothing spectacular.

It’s very tough to say how they would view your grades. UCs take a highly quantative approach like most state colleges, and often this unfairly impacts kids from very competitive high schools.

Why the UCs? They are pretty much the same price as the good private colleges for out of state students and they’re having big problems now with the CA budget crisis.

I don’t know about the UCs, they are just kind of there. All I’m really aiming for right now is UWash. I understand that they might not interpret my grades in my favor if they just look at the numbers. I’m hoping they take a second to consider my situation though.

Assuming that UWash takes my grades to be top 85% of state (is that B? A-?), what do you think my chance is there?

Thanks again.

What is your actual GPA? That is what UW will look at. I live in WA state so I can comment on your chances for UW with decent accuracy. If your GPA is above 3.6 and you write great essays, you should be fine.
UCLA and UC Berkeley will, as the poster above stated, take a more quantitative approach to determine whether or not you will be offered admission. Thus, it is highly unlikely for you to be admitted based on your low grades and average test scores. Best of luck! I hope you get into at least one of those UC’s!
