My unhooked son is applying EA to LSA from OOS. ACT 34, 3.9 UW, solid but not perfect rigor (no AP calc or AP science, just honors) meaningful ECs, leadership and a distinguishing writing award. We were grad students there, although I doubt that’s useful. Obviously Michigan is great and he’d be lucky to attend. He is going EA but understands about OOS selectivity. Should we assume little to no FA if he got in? Thanks in advance.
Try their NPC for FA. He is within the mid 50 range and above admission average. The OOS admission rate is around 20%, while his chance should be higher than that.
Thanks, @billcsho. Do you think Michigan values the essays more than most schools? Or about the same? Hard to answer, I know, but careful reading of thousands of essays seems like a brutal task. I ask because his writing is a strength. And is the NPC the same for OOS? Thank you!
I think he has very decent chances. The net price calculator for financial aid was very accurate for us. If he’s an excellent writer…it can’t hurt:) (lingering concern in my mind, though…would a lot rather see him asking these questions than mom/dad)
@binky17 A bad essay can kill the chance, while a good one may help.
@billcsho thanks again.
@binky17 I am a current student at the university, and was in a similar situation you seem to be in. I got in OOS Early action with a 35, 3.9, so somewhat similar. My best advice is definitely do EA, and you should have a good chance. By the way, expect very little FA. I did get a decent grant about a month before my freshman year started, but I would say to start with lower expectations. Good Luck!
Thank you, @quintessence21. I am the applicant’s parent, btw, so I don’t want to mislead you – he’s too busy for online speculation these days! We have heard not to expect much. Good for you and have a great semester!
@binky17 thats right you did I see now. Well best of luck to him! Thank you
