Hello! I am an international student from Indonesia and I will be graduating from high school this coming spring. I was a winner of YES, a full scholarship from the Dept of State for students of countries with significant Moslem population. I was hosted in Pipestone, MN and I really want to go back to Minnesota for college! I am really passionate about chemistry and I'm planning to major in chem. I'm already looking at some liberal arts colleges in the USA. I read that Carleton has six full-tuition scholarships for international undergraduate students(?) that I have yet to learn more. However, I am not sure of my chance of getting in.

My Indonesian high school provides neither IB nor AP, although I consider the curriculum itself rigorous. This is why I tried to make the most out of my exchange year in the States. During my exchange year I took tests that I thought would better my chance in applying for colleges (and those that would otherwise be unavailable where I come from) including the ACT. I think I did better than I expected with English not being my native language (34 Composite Score - 31 in Science, 34 in Math and English, 35 Reading). I also took AP Chem and Lang and got 5 in both of them.

I understand that academics will not be the only important point in applying to Carleton. I believe extracurricular activities will also play a big part in the application process. Before I went to the States I was really involved with the Chemistry Team in my Indonesian high school and had won several national competitions. During my exchange year I fell in love with speech and choir (made All-Conference in both of them!) I was also in yearbook staff and softball. I did a lot of volunteering activities as a part of my scholarship including making cultural presentations for my community in Pipestone. Now that I'm back in Indonesia for my senior year, I am also teaching English to underprivileged children in Indonesia.

If it was not for the generous scholarship that I received from Dept of State, I don't think I would get the chance to know Carleton and do all of those things. Still, I feel that I did not have the same opportunities as most applicants throughout my high school career. This is my biggest concern. If anyone would give me advice regarding the application process for an international student and the international full-tuition scholarships, that would be perfect. I have put a lot of thoughts into going to Carleton, yet such small concerns worry me. Thank you very much!
