Chance for Berkeley/UCLA?

Hi friend,

I am currently attending Saddleback Community College and planing to transfer to Berkeley as math or UCLA as math/econ for 2014 Fall.

I completed 21 units(all A), and I am taking 25 units in this Fall.

Sadly,I will get a B on this semester. Even it is my major prerequisite, Linear Algebra.

So, by the end of Fall semester, I will have 3.91 GPA(46 units). Honestly, I think 3.91 is enough for these two schools.

But, remaining subjects, Physic, Differential Equation, English 2 and Anthropology, are important subjects.

For Berkeley, I can finish all prerequisites and complete IGETC, but for UCLA, I will miss one prerequisite that is not offered by my school.

Here are my questions.

Is taking important subjects in Spring really matter?

Will having a B on major kill my chance?

Is missing one prerequisite OK?

Do I have a good chance for those school?

I have no e.c. Is that also matter?

A 3.91 GPA is excellent for UCLA or Berkeley for the major of Math/Econ. The average gpa of those who were admitted into the Math/Econ major at UCLA was 3.69, so I say that you have a good chance of getting in at UCLA. Getting a B in one class, even if it’s a prerequisite for your major won’t decrease your chances of getting admitted very much. Your GPA is excellent.

Furthermore, if your school doesn’t offer a class for your major that you need for UCLA, that will not be counted against you. UCLA is very understanding of these kinds of things. If the class isn’t offered by your school, UCLA won’t reject you because of it. That would be unfair. They’ll just want you to take the class at UCLA once you transfer, if you are accepted. I think you will be because of your GPA.

Extracurriculars matter far more for UC Berkeley than for UCLA, so you probably won’t be accepted by them. UCLA focuses on your grades, the completion of major prerequisites, and the GPA of those major prerequisites.

Overall, I’d say that you have a great shot at getting into UCLA, but not much of a chance at Berkeley. Sorry about that, lol. But UCLA is an excellent school.

In regards to taking the “important subjects” in Spring, you’ll probably be fine. Many people complete those kinds of classes in the Spring and still get accepted.

regardless of the GPA, i thought you need at least 60 units to transfer?

By the end of Spring, I will have finished 61 units.

Cayton,

I really appreciate your kind response!!*So, do you mean I will get accepted by UCLA unless something comes up? And, not having e.c would take out my chance of getting into Berkeley?

I really appreciate your kind response!!

So, do you mean I will get accepted by UCLA unless something comes up?

And, Not having e.c would take out my chance of getting into Berkeley?

Whoa there! I tip my cap to you. That’s a whole bunch of units right there. If you do indeed only get one B and your GPA is a 3.91 or anywhere near there, you should have a great shot at both schools. Looks like a near lock at UCLA and a 50-50% chance at UCB.

Is taking important subjects in Spring really matter?
It depends but not really.

Will having a B on major kill my chance?
No.

Is missing one prerequisite OK?
If your school doesn’t offer it, it’s OK.

Do I have a good chance for those school?
Yep

I have no e.c. Is that also matter?
Only matters at UCB and even then, not THAT much. It’s not like no EC = automatic rejection haha.

Make sure you kill the PS’s. Check your grammar and good luck!

@Snorlaz

Thank you for your response and advise.

As you feel, my first language is not English. I will check over and over my grammar as you said.

It would seem that Berkeley is the most concerned about ec’s out of all the UCs. If you keep up your good grades, you should gain admission into UCLA. Good luck, man.

Missing 1 pre-req isn’t good, especially for a competitive major like cs but your GPA is very high. I wouldn’t worry about that B.

e.c. matter a lot for UCB but GPA is usually supreme, especially for stem majors.
