Chance for BME? MIT, UPenn, JHU...

I posted once before but I wasn’t able to get any feedback, probably because of my first post status. It’d be greatly appreciated if you chanced even just the schools you know.

So here goes…

Trying to go into BME, pre-med is a fallback, violin performance minor maybe

Schools: John Hopkins, UMich, Northwestern, Carnegie mellon, Georgia Tech, Case Western, Cornell, UPenn, MIT

I go to a public school in Michigan. Asian Male. Charismatic, a tiny bit cocky, overall easy going (I dunno, maybe for interviews)

SAT I: N/A
ACT (breakdown): 36C 36R 36S 36M 35E 6 on essay lol
SAT II (subject, score): Expected 750+ Math 2, 750ish on chem, 720-740 BioM)
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.7 on transcript, probably slightly lower on 4.0 scale
Weighted GPA: no clue, our school weights weird
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 15% in class of 350 (worst part of my app)
AP (place score in parentheses):
Sophomore Year: APUSH 5 Bio 4
Junior Year: Chem 4, Gov 3, Stats 4, Calc AB 4
Senior Year: Calc BC, Phys 1, LangComp, MusicTheo, EnviroSci
Max course rigor first three years, one free period senior year

Senior Year Course Load:
AP Calc BC
AP Lang
AP Phys1
Orchestra
Econ/Health (school reqs)
Free Period/Early Leave (Kind of worried about this)
Post secondary intro to organic chem at mediocre school
To make up for free period, I help out the middle school orchestra with tuning and basically act as teacher aid. Not sure if/where to put that on app

Major Awards (USAMO, Intel, etc.): nope
Common Awards (AP Scholar, honor roll, NM things, etc.): AP Scholar wi distinct lol

Subjective:
Extracurriculars (name, grade levels, leadership, description):
NHS, 11/12, President
Orchestra, 9-12, President
Model UN, 11-12, President/Founder
Student Class rep
Gigging band, Violin, we do a lot of gigs and youtube stuff, run social media
Played with a huge international rapper on his tour
All State Orchestra, 11-12, 2nd stand
Prestigious Youth Orchestra, 9-12, Asst Concertmaster 10 and 11, Concertmaster 12
Other Prestigious Youth Orchestra, First Violin 12
Writer for School Newspaper, 9-12 and editor 12
Math Club, 9-12
Science Olympiad 9-12
Co-cap frisbee club team, 10-12
Job/Work Experience: nope
Volunteer/Community Service: ~300 hours from local hospital
Other Stuff: upload cover videos onto my own youtube channel with decent success (Probably not worth putting on the app)

Teacher Recs: Will be decent. 7-8/10. Science teacher and English Teacher.
Counselor Rec: We talk a ton, will probably be really good. 9/10

Essay: My common app essay will be killer, but due to my procrastinating nature my supplementals will be rushed. Yes, I know that that is a negative quality but I’m just being honest with myself.

Questions: I know JHU BME is insanely hard to get into and I know that you can’t transfer into BME easily from another major, is it worth applying on a premed track just to get in or should I just go for BME?
Also, for UMich, if I apply for the college of engineering, I can’t get into LSA if I’m rejected from CoE, correct?

Thanks!

Bump

You have quite a few reaches on your list. Be realistic and recognize that the odds for anybody, even the 2400 Intel winner, getting in MIT is low. I think you have some good matches though. Just look at average stats of accepted students and acceptance rate.

^^ Not sure I agree that the odds of 2400 Intel winner are low.

Pre med is not a good back up plan, especially at Northwestern. People here usually do BME or engineering with the intent of going pre med and if they drop BME, pre med goes with it. BME is also the hardest major on campus and Chem 101 is an extremely difficult weeder course. So I would be cautious with BME and using pre med as a back up. In addition, NU students tend to be on the humble side, so if you are arrogant and cocky when you get her, someone will call you out on that for sure. Maybe in public too.

@andyis thank you so much! which one would you classify as reaches and matches and stuff? i was wondering because looking at stats don’t help much when my class rank and gpa is really low and my act is high

@CaliCash Thanks man, that does help a lot. What do you think my chances are for NU?

Your stats look good. Why not Duke for BME?

I was thinking about it, but I haven’t visited and no one from my school has gotten in ever so I didn’t think it’d be worth the time. Amazing school though. Could you chance me for the rest?

I’m a Duke Alum. I think you have a decent chance.
