Chance for BS/MD

Hey all!

I’m a rising junior and I’m thinking about applying to a BS/MD 7 or 8 year program. I know how difficult it is, but I was just wondering if I’m in a relatively “ok” spot. If anyone has advice on what to do, or how to expand on extra curriculars that would be greatly appreciated.

Ethnicity: Indian (South Indian)
Intended Major: Don’t exactly know but if I don’t get into a BS/MD probably Bio, Sociology/Anthropology, or Psych
SAT: Didn’t take it yet lol (i know it’s early)
PSAT: 1300
GPA: 4.60/5 W (school doesn’t report rank and it’s weighted)

Courses:
Next year I’m taking

  • AP Bio
-APUSH (lol it’s hard but i enjoy humanities and i also wanted to be well rounded)
  • AP Lang
  • Honors PreCalc
  • Honors French 4
  • Honors A Capella

(self studying psych and maybeeee gov)

Awards (these probably mean nothing):

  • Finalist in Oratorical Declamation at George Mason University Patriot Games National Speech and Debate Tournament
  • State Champion in Multiple Reading for Massachusetts Speech and Debate League
  • Double Octofinalist in Dramatic Performance at 46th Annual Harvard National Forensics Tournament
  • 7th Place in Oratorical Declamation for Massachusetts State Speech and Debate League
  • 1st Place in Oratorical Declamation for Needham Speech and Congress Tournament
  • Varsity Letter in Shrewsbury High School Swim and Dive Team
  • President of Junior States of America School Chapter
  • Highest Honors in School Honor Roll

I quit swim after freshman year cause our coach wasn’t great and i was starting to fall behind on my grades so idk how useful it is saying i did swim but i went to leagues lol

Extra Curriculars:

  • Varsity Speech and Debate
  • Tri-M Honor Society
  • Founder of a club at school
  • Soccer coach at Teamworks (quit for one session might come back)

Medical Related:

  • Free Health Clinic – Shadowing/Intern
Shadowing several medical students and physicians every week. Tasks involve observing physicals, as well as observing appointments and medical practices. Services are provided regardless of financial background. Learning medical terminology as well as practices.

Potential research things next year (cause of corona most things are cancelled rip)

Volunteering:
Mustard Seed – Soup Kitchen Volunteer
Volunteer every Friday for people who are impoverished. Serving food and drink.

Whitney Place – Organizer, Pianist, and Vocalist
Volunteer for a singing program every month alongside little kids. Singing for elders in senior centers.

Middle School Speech Team – Coach
Coach for the Oak Middle School Speech Team. Training done every week for middle schoolers

And that’s about it lol. It would be greatly appreciated for the help!!

I just noticed that you are currently a HS sophomore.

Are you an international applicant…or just of Indian background? That makes a difference.

BS/MD programs are more competitive for admission than any elite college you can name.

No way to predict how competitive you might be a couple of years from now. But having a Plan B is worth having.

There are many threads in Multiple Degree programs. Yearly discussion and results threads will have lot of details. At the same time, being a student would suggest don’t spend too much time in CC after you get an idea of what you need to do. Rather focus on your school work and whatever activities you enjoy, Don’t have to spread too thin, do what you like most, consistently (not for check box in an app) and truly try to help people who are under served. No need to do shadowing so much or all has to be medical related activities (since will be hard also with age, with the current situation).

Also it is early to know since not taken SAT/ACT and APs or subject tests etc.,
It is very competitive and need to have good test scores and GPA and ECs, Essays, Interviews etc., Also remember just apply for few BS/MD programs but apply widely for UG . Still another year is there, wait. But 95% of students get into MD via regular admission.
