Chance for Cornell ED! Cookies?

Firstly, thanks for reading. This is an updated chance me thread :p

Major : CS
Minor math?

Applying to:
Cornell ED
MIT
Harvey Mudd
USC
NYU
UW Seattle
GATech
UMD - CP

Secondly, i study under the GCE british system. So im posting my grades, dont convert to gpa as theyre not meant to be. These are exam grades.

O Level Board Exams
Math - A*
English - A*
Computer Studies - A*
Additional Mathematics - A
Physics - A
Chemistry - A
Biology - B
Islamic Studies - B

A level school grades:

Note: the 1st and 3rd quarter grades are not serious. I dont even think school sends those. I think they only send mid term and finals. As mid term and finals are full mock examinations whereas 1st and 3rd are small school tests. I think school only uses it for their own check up to make sure we dont slack off. Most schools in the district only take midterms and finals.

1st:
Math - A*
Further Math - D
Physics - B
Computer Studies - A*
(Family trouble, dad suffering heart failure before my exams)

Mid term:
Math - A*
Further Math - A
Physics - B
Computer Studies - A
(As u can see, further math went D→A)

3rd:
Math - C
Further Math - C
Physics - F
Computer Studies - A*
(Assuming this gets sent, how bad will one bad quarter look?)

Finals:
Math - A*
Further Math - B
Physics - B
Computer Studies - A*

The grades on my finals will probably be my predicted for the board. Except im gonna try to bump further math to an A as well.

School doesnt rank (obviously, no gpa so its hard to rank)

SAT
Math - 750
CR - 550
Writing - 680

Giving again in october. Practice tests showing consistency to :
Math - 800
CR - 600-650
Writing - 700

Giving SAT II in nov.
Math II and physics
Practice tests indicate 750+

EC:
I live outside USA so my EC's are limited. Not too many clubs and stuff.

Muslim Student association (2009-2010)
Council Position
Model UN (2 best delegate, 1 honorable mention)
Assistant commitee director at my schools model UN
Captain of basketball team

Volunteering:
Islamic center (2008-2009)
Different islamic center (2009-2010)

Ive gotten feedback by about some ppl on my esaay. So far, theyve all loved it.

Recommendations solid. My O level english teacher and A level math teacher will write amazing recommendations for me.

Btw, i am a US citizen so im not considered an int'l applicant.

Ahh, this is a tough one. You have nice scores at school (one bad quarter won’t eliminate your chances, but make sure you explain the circumstances), but your SAT is lacking heavily in CR. If you score what the diagnostics show, then you might be alright for SAT. Your ec’s are also lacking, as you said. However, I understand that opportunities internationally may be few and far between. Overall, I would say mid-high reach, if you get a nice adcom, low-mid reach.

Bump! What about the others?

MIT is the only other reach on your list. The others are matches/high matches.

Bump10char

If those bad quarters do get sent, you’re definitely done for.

If not, I would try to raise that Critical Reading score. 600-650 is too low.

Bump10char

Finally, feels good to meet someone else here studying under the GCE system.
First of all, the fact that you are an American citizen will go a looong way in helping you out. I can understand your dilemma regarding ECs but they’re pretty solid, don’t worry. Your mid year and finals are good but I’m afraid that the whole secondary school record is sent to the colleges. At least my school sends them. If yours doesn’t goof for you. However, even if it does, those failures and slip-ups in between mean nothing since you have shown that you are capable of producing great grades at the ends of the day. So don’t worry about the F and D. And yes, you do need a better CR score. Otherwise I say you’re good to go for Cornell ED. I’m sure it will happen if you try your best. Good luck!

^
Dude, “don’t worry about the F and D?” Cornell rejects the majority of 4.0 Valedictorians… If his school winds up sending those then he’s completely done for.

Bump. Need some more help. Really worried about the quarter grades. Thats what made me make this thread

First you need to make sure that the D, F, and Cs are NOT sent. Talk to your school about it. If some of these more selective schools see those grades, they probably won’t consider you. You have a lot of Bs too, but I don’t know entirely how the gce system works, all I know is that CDF grades look bad.

SAT 2 is good. EC’s aren’t bad for someone living outside of the US, but not great either. You also need to get your SAT score up. Math is good, writing will be fine if you bump it up just a few points, but you should shoot for bumping CR up to at least 700. Make that your goal.

I don’t know too much about chancing for most of your schools but I’d say that MIT is a high reach and that Cornell is a mid reach. Hopefully you write a really good essay.

I just found something out. A ‘B’ in GCE is equivalent to an A- in the American system. And a ‘C’ is equivalent to an American ‘B’. However, an F is still an F:(

MIT and Cornel are reaches. The rest your set for.

I know i said dont convert to GPA but i decided to. Lol. This very loose, u cant accurately convert. But this is the closest conversion as provided by the CIE website.
O level Board Exams (Sophomore): 3.925
Junior: 3.44 UW, 4.44 W
Overall: 3.6 UW, 4.27 W
I can bump the junior gpa to a 3.55 UW and 4.55 W with my first quarter of senior year.
GCE is more rigorous. Coming from a kid who did his freshman yr in the USA taking all honors and 1 AP.

mit would defs be a reach, if you apply ed to cornell it may help but i would also try to find some outside connection/way in otherwise im not sure thats a reasonable one or not…

I think you have great extracurrriculars! However, your Grades are a bit low. But, if your essays are good, then I think things will work out for you!. Btw, I’m also a Muslim! Assalamu aAaikum!
Cornell ED- Mid Reach

MIT-Reach
Harvey Mudd-Match
USC-Low Match
NYU-Low Match
UW Seattle-Match
GATech-Match
UMD - CP-Match

^u too brother. Ramadan mubarak.

Now, lets suppose my quarters dont get sent, ive asked around and heard mixed results. I will ask my GC when school.reopens (and beg her not to send it)

That would put my approximate (again this cannot be put to exact) at 3.88 UW and 4.88 W for my junior year. O level translates to a 3.925, so overall UW would be 3.9 about.

Now how do my chances look?
