Please chance her for Tufts, UCLA, Georgetown, USC, Northwestern, Notre Dame, NYU, Rice, Vanderbilt, UofChicago.

And what are some safety colleges she can apply for?

Many of those schools (if not all), since they’re not Ivies, value standardized test scores. While all of the academic achievement looks good and the ECs are fine, I think that none of those schools would be matches (except maybe UCLA if you’re in state, USC, and NYU).

Please chance me:

Historically at least, UCLA weights GPA and rigor more highly than SAT. If she is serious about UCLA, and presumably instate, she should calculate her uncapped UCGPA. Not always the same as weighted gpa. Her unweighted gpa should help a lot, and so should the fact that unlike other UC’s, UCLA doesn’t seem to cap their UCGPA.

They post profiles of their admitted freshman every year.

If she is not instate, be aware that some of the others might make more financial sense.

This profile is 2012

That’s not a low SAT. It’s a respectable score. However, for the schools she’s applying to she should get it up. With her GPA, SAT, and EC’s, she’s in to NYU for sure. The other schools, honestly, nobody knows what they’re looking for. Best of luck.

SAT is relatively low…she should definitely retake it. Raises red flags on the difficulty of her high school since her SAT II scores aren’t stellar. Any AP Scores?

What’s her major?

Notre Dame - Match
UCLA - Match (raise that SAT score)
Tufts - High Match
Georgetown- High Reach
Northwestern - Reach
NYU - Match/High Match
Rice - Reach
Vanderbilt - Match/High Match
U Chicago - Reach

Those standardized test scores are definitely killing her chances at some good schools. If she raises those scores, she should have a chance at most of the schools you listed.

Chance Back?

I’m a California native so I have a pretty good understanding of the UC system

For Berkeley -(I haven’t been wrong yet or disproved) if you have a 3.83+ and a 2150+ with some EC’s, you should be an auto-in.

All UC’s take SAT’s and GPA as the biggest factors into admissions.

@OP, I meant relatively low for the schools she’s applying to. Chemistry major with a 620 SAT II Chemistry score is questionable.

Good luck to your sister

^So in your experience, gpa and sat are weighted evenly? I wonder if that is relatively new. It’s been a few years since my kids applied. In the past, gpa and class rigor seemed to carry more weight. It was certainly true for my kids, but that part is anecdotal.

Too bad there is no more statfinder!

@Shrinkrap… on a 100 point scale I would say GPA carries 65 percent and SAT 45 percent

I mean this is generalization, this is the usual case…would be inaccurate if I said all acceptances were held under those stats I provided previously.

That could be right. I think weighting gpa more heavily was part of the idea behind elc program.

And the OP’s sister is number one in her class. Technically rank doesn’t count, but I’ve seen kids who were number one in their class do well in spite of less than average SAT’s. Look at the admit rate for kids with an unweighted 4.0! Better than the admit rate for kids scoring in the top band of SAT’s. It looks like OP’s sisters SAT was close to average for students admitted to UCLA in 2012.

Anyway, good luck to her.

@Shrinkrap can you chance me LOL

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1527201-gpa-vs-good-decent-standardized-test-chances.html

LOL indeed!

I only really follow the UC’s, and don’t think “chancing” usually makes a lot of sense. But I’ll take a look.

You may need to bring your SAT up by 100-200 points for most of these schools.

Try the ACT!

@philosophymaj how much would she have to raise it by?

@YUNGKHALIFA420 she has and the score is not so hot either

& we are not native Californians so uc schools are not really at the top of our list

bumpppp please

Her SAT2 scores are not so good either. It seems her chance at most of these top schools are not very good.

Bumpppppppppppp

Bump if you think she can’t go to these schools then where can she go?
