I was wondering if I could get a chance for the following schools/programs (the programs I am referring to are the 7/8 year early assurance medical programs):

MIT
Dartmouth
Duke
Johns Hopkins BME
Harvard
BU 7 year Med Program
RPI 7 year Med Program
Wash U 8 year Med Program
Northwestern HPME (7 year med program)
Case Western 8 year PPSP Medicine

Location: East coast
School: Competitive public high school (about 450 kids)

Gender: Male

GPA: 98.4 (unweighted); 101.9 (weighted); (on a 4.0 scale my unweighted is a 4.0 not sure about the weighted)
Rank: On track to being valedictorian (projected: 1/125)
Courses: Most rigorous curriculum including 7 AP courses (my school offers 15)

Junior year (projected place score in parenthesis):
AP Chemistry (4 or 5)

AP English Language (5)

Senior year courses I plan on taking:

AP Calculus BC
AP English Literature

PSAT: 204
ACT: 32 (went in cold; retaking and am confident of a 34 or 35)
SAT: Don't plan on taking (depends on ACT retake score)
SAT Subject Tests: Math 1 (700); I am taking Chemistry and Math 2 and think I can get a 750+ on both.

Math Club- 9-12 (Highest scorer from entire high school in competitions)

Volunteering at Hospital- 9-12 (Medicine is my true passion)
*I also plan on shadowing a physician starting this summer

Awards:
Multiple school awards for excellence
Highest GPA award every year since 9th grade
Principal's List every quarter since 9th grade
U.S. Air Force Math and Science Award
Probably National Merit Commended

Well to put it in perspective, I’ve gotten a 96 in like one class every year and other than that all my other grades have been 98 or better. And also (I don’t mean to sound snotty when I say this but) are you aware that the acceptance rates into the five medical programs I listed are lower than that those of the ivies? The only reason I bring it up is because you said I would be fine for the medical programs but not for the ivies.
Thanks

Wow! Awesome stats. But then again very awesome schools as well. I think if you do raise your ACT to around a 35 though, I think you can get into BU or NorthWestern. Not sure about the other schools though.

MIT- reach. If you can raise your ACT up a little you would have a better shot of making it in.
Dartmouth- I say high match
Duke- Being Valedictorian helps alot, so I say match
Johns Hopkins BME- high match. You volunteering at a hospital should surley help
Harvard- Same as MIT
BU 7 year Med Program- match
RPI 7 year Med Program- high match
Wash U 8 year Med Program- match
Northwestern HPME (7 year med program)- match
Case Western 8 year PPSP Medicine- match

You have very good EC’s and your GPA is off the charts. The only problem really is that you have no hooks and your ACT is a little low. Once you raise that ACT score, you have a much better chance at all these schools you are applying to

^Do you guys think that I would need extremely high SAT Subject Tests scores (like 790 or 800) to get into those schools/programs? I’m just really nervous with my subject tests because the SAT is not my thing (hence my reluctancy to take it) and I only got a 700 on Math 1 (and Math is my best subject; granted I did take the Math 1 in 10th grade).

If you can get the 750+ on Chem and Math II as you say, then you should be fine, though for Math II getting the 800 will work out much better (so many people apply with 800’s in Math II).

I don’t know if the above posters know this, but it is incredibly difficult to get into the 7-8 year early assurance med programs (especially the northwestern and WashU ones). That being said:
MIT: high reach
Dartmouth: high reach
Duke: reach
Johns Hopkins BME: reach
Harvard: high reach
BU 7 year Med Program: high reach
RPI 7 year Med Program: lowish reach
Wash U 8 year Med Program: highly unlikely (you probably have a better chance at Harvard/MIT)
Northwestern HPME (7 year med program): Same as Wash U
Case Western 8 year PPSP Medicine: high reach

The reason for the lower chances on the med programs is that you don’t really have any special extracurricular that show an interest in medicine. Volunteering at the hospital is great, but as a minor you can’t really interact with patients (or do much of anything) at the hospital. Try to do something more special this summer that you also enjoy. Look for a research internship, shadow doctors, and maybe try to become an EMT.

MIT - high reach
Dartmouth - low reach
Duke - low reach
Johns Hopkins BME - high reach
Harvard - high reach
BU 7 year Med Program - reach
RPI 7 year Med Program - low reach
Wash U 8 year Med Program - high reach
Northwestern HPME (7 year med program) - match
Case Western 8 year PPSP Medicine - match

Your grades are fine although your scores are quite low (hopefully this will be, as you say, remedied in the retakes). You have a lot of ECs but they lack focus, especially on medicine, which will hurt you with the super-selective colleges and programs.

Hey! Thanks for chancing me. I would say honestly a lot of these schools are total and utter crapshoots, especially with a program as selective as BME/HPME’s. But, nonetheless, there is absolutely nothing wrong with throwing your metaphorical hat into the ring! Although, I have to say-- as others have said, your EC’s could show more passion for medicine (since I assume that’s what you want to go into), and your scores could be higher for such a rigorous and selective program. But nonetheless-- good luck to you!

I think you ahve a very solid application. You are a junior right? Get those test scores up as you said and you have great chances at all of these schools. Difficult to say which of them are more difficult than the others, so I will just say that you will probably get into several of these colleges.

Yes I am a junior so I have time. I’m signed up to retake the ACT in April so that gives me plenty of time to prep (I really hope I can get a 35 and be done with it). If not, I guess I would have one more chance Sept. or Oct. of my senior year, but I’m trying to get it over with by April. And I chanced you back!

MIT: high reach
Dartmouth: high reach
Duke: low reach
Johns Hopkins BME: cant say, these med programs are extremely competitive. Especially at such already super competitive schools…
Harvard: high reach
BU 7 year Med Program: reach
RPI 7 year Med Program: reach
Wash U 8 year Med Program: Same as JHU BME
Northwestern HPME (7 year med program): Same as JHU BME
Case Western 8 year PPSP Medicine: reach

you have selected extremely competitive colleges/programs, care to add some safeties?
you need to shine out of the ordinary for the 7-8 yrs programs…more internships and ECs to show your focus…
yes, and the SAT scores you plan to get, will help you.

Best of luck mate, hope you get in most them…
(:

Yeah I didnt list my safeties because im pretty confident i’ll get in to at least one of them. they are BU, case, rpi and binghamton (just the regular school no fancy med. program)

Yeah I think that if you get your test scores up to around a 35, you are in at BU, case, RPI, and BIng without the med programs. You will have a good chance at Duke. That said, all the others will be huge reaches as they are for most people. Good Luck
