Chance for MIT

I'm applying a year early, so I've had a year less than most applicants

Now for the ugly part - I'm an Asian male from NJ...crap

Chances at MIT please..

Please could someone just give their opinion?

Pretty slim, because your numbers are good but your extracurrics and math/science activities are not at the same level. Also because you're an orm from an over represented state.

Why are you applying as a junior? Why not stay in school another year and rack up some more awards?

well the asian definitely doesn't help
but you're SAT scores are really good
are you only taking two APs? you might want more of those
your app is extremely focused on math and physics which makes sense, but try for a little more diversity too
Why don't you stay in school 1 more year to get more APs, get to the USAMO (the level after the AIME which is after AMC 12)
also strive for more leadership roles, the EC is weak
I'd say pretty slim, your ECs need a lot of work...try to do something outside of your school instead of only school clubs and such

i agree with erbody above
the thing is, honestly, the people who apply as a junior are those who receive the 2400s on the SAT and who are taking senior classes as freshmen, etc.
in other words, the OUTSTANDING student
not to say that your credentials are not magnificent, but just realize that you are going to be compared with not only the other asian applicants in the country (and NJ) but also the other early applicants from around the country, many of whom have the crazy first place national science fair awards, USAMO status, and crap like that
I would suggest waiting another year to apply, build up your ECs, and maybe get an internship/job
if you do that, you're still going to have a huge advantage against other applicants

and remember, if it's your parents that are pushing you to apply early - it's your life, so make your own decisions
<3 ya gurl

your chances of getting in are close to 0. Lacking ECs, low SAT, not straight As.

wait what?
he has great SAT and he does have straight A's
what are you looking at?

ok i took amc too and if i recall cut off was 97.5

i suggest not putting anythign about amc because like so many kids pass amc and go to aime
i passed with 136 but didn't get into usamo AIME is so hard

17 kids got into MIT this year and all of them were usamo qualifiers/ some were usa physics olympiads and semifinalists

also think about doing intel

its hard to say you'll get into MIT even if you have a great s.a.t score

because basically the seats are taken for genius' who excel in subjects in the national level.
far greater than getting a good score in the s.a.t and having a great average

does being asian really affect you that much?

yezzzzzzzzzz

You have a very good chance of getting in, only thing that is against you are your random EC's

"17 kids got into MIT this year and all of them were usamo qualifiers/ some were usa physics olympiads and semifinalists"

!! from your school alone? lol what school do you go to? Thomas Jefferson?

yea i go to t.j

my schools average s.a.t score was 2320

I wouldn't take what kevinobrien said so seriously because I don't think he goes to TJ (unless he's talking about the other TJ in VA, but the stats don't match up). I may be wrong, but:

You're not on the Intranet (TJ's online school directory)

14 kids got in MIT this year, not 17

TJ's average SAT score is DEFINITELY not 2320. (It's 2400 :-P lol seriously it's probably 2100-2200)

Also, I looked at your past posts, and based on those:

TJ doesn't have any honors physics awards...we technically don't even have "honors" since all classes are taught at that level. TJ doesn't offer awards regardless for doing well in classes.

You can't be the founder of FBLA at TJ, that would be ridiculous.

Kids don't automatically get into Ivy's from TJ with a 3.5 UW GPA

So yeah...I wouldn't take his statements to heart too much. Being an AMC qualifier is still a respectable thing, although it's more common for MIT applicants.

I just got the satisfaction of calling someone out, on the internet of all things...yay?

You really have an outstanding record, with outstanding classes. I think you can get in pretty easily, if not as a Junior, then as a Senior.

Are you by any chance from the UC Magnet school in Scotch Plains?

Yea, that is where I go to school for now...

Wow, yeah that's what I thought because your curriculum is pretty similar to mine (I go to AAHS).

Good luck getting into MIT, I think you'd be the first one from the school if you did.

To be honest, you have a LOT of weaknesses.
for one, though your GPA and SAT may be good,
your AMC score is not too impressive
and you don't have any outstanding extras.
i think you have 0%

Listen MIT is a crapshot for everyone...GPA and SAT help, but they are not important..
MIT wants to see science love(research),passions and a good essay.
