Chance for Oberlin & other LACs, please?

Sorry, I know it's really obnoxious to make a new thread, but it's been a while and I needed to update a few things. Thanks in advance!

GPA:

For all three years combined, it's a 90.38 (I think that's a 3.7? Not positive.) My school does weird things with the weighting, so according to them, that's both my weighted and my unweighted GPA...not sure what to make of that. I had semester averages in the high eighties for my freshman and sophomore years (I had an 89/100 freshman year, and a 87/100 sophomore year), then pulled a 95.97 (weighted) last semester and a 94.94 this semester...it's an upwards trend, and I have medical reasons as to why my average was lower as an underclassman. I've taken the hardest courses offered at my school--all honors, plus AP Global (4), AP US (Pending), and AP Language and Composition (Pending).

What worries me is that I'm not taking the most challenging courseload for next year--we offer 4 APs in total, you can take 3, but I'm only taking two (AP Lit and AP Spanish) because neither AP Chem or AP Calc were classes I felt I could achieve much in. Moreover, I've taken two college classes in my junior year (the most we're allowed to take), and I'll be doing the same this year--I got an A+ and an A- in the two courses this year. Finally, I don't know if this helps, but I go to one of the top 50 public high schools in America, according to US News and World Report.

We don't rank because there's 100 kids in my grade...I have genuinely no idea where I'd be, but I'm assuming somewhere in the top 25ish.

ACT: 33 composite, 10 on the writing on my first try. I'm not planning to take it again. The breakdown was something like a 35 Writing, 29 Math, 36 Reading, and I have no memory of what the science was.

In terms of other testing, I took the Global SAT II and got a 620, which I was very unhappy with. I'm not the greatest test-taker around, and the short time + a ton of questions combo for the SAT IIs really didn't do me well.

Extra-Curriculars:

Volunteering (I'd guess about 15 hours, with a good deal more to come this summer), Babysitting, and Petsitting (minimally), but I also was the Vice-President of my school's Glee Club last year (I was a regular member in freshman year), along with being the Secretary of Environmental Club. Although I was not elected to a higher position in Environmental Club this year, I remained a member. Unfortunately, I hadn't been a part of it in freshman year.

I also sing in a world-reknowned children's chorus and have been in it for about five years...I've sung in two continents, and in many major concert halls throughout America, so I'm hoping that'll work to my advantage, especially because my conductor will write me a recommendation and he's recently won a rather prestigious award.

Before sophomore year, I interned for two weeks at a small non-profit organization, but this summer, I was accepted for a six-week intensive internship working with the district attorney's office of my city (trying to keep some anonymity here, sorry), which has sent interns to very strong colleges and is a very selective process.

I'm assuming I'll have very strong recommendations (I'm very close with my teachers), and I'm confident in my essay-writing abilities...sorry for how pretentious that sounded.

Oberlin's probably my top choice, but I'm also curious about Tufts (super reach), Cornell (probably IRL, super super reach), Bates, Skidmore, Muhlenberg, Bucknell, American University, Northeastern, Boston College, and Goucher. Also, I'd love any suggestions about where else to apply! I'm not sure this is a very diverse list, and that scares me.

Finally, for college students/grads: Did any of you submit arts portfolios, and if so, do you think it affected your admission? I've been considering sending in some of my original songs or singing some classical pieces, but I'm not sure.
Thank you!

Oberlin - low reach
Tufts - reach
Cornell - reach
Bates - high match
Skidmore - match
Muhlenberg - match
Bucknell - high match
American - match
Northeastern - high match
BC - reach
Goucher - safety

I think you have a good chance at Oberlin. Your ACT is definitely within range, I think, and obviously the chorus stuff will appeal to them (even if you’re not applying to the conservatory, which I’m assuming you’re not). And from my interactions with the admissions office, they strike me as the type of school to be understanding of earlier medical issues and to appreciate an upward trend. That said, I wouldn’t bother submitting an arts supplement if I were you. I’m a pianist, and from what I’ve heard (my uncle is head of piano at WUSTL) there’s pretty much no point unless you’re conservatory-level, especially for Oberlin. (If you are, go ahead!)

I think not taking AP Chem is totally fine, and I’m in a similar position re: not taking math/science APs. Buuuut unfortunately I think a lot of colleges will want to see calc senior year :/

I think any school with a more holistic, essay-centric admissions process would be easier for you (I’m thinking LACs like Oberlin/Skidmore/maybe Bates) than a university even if the university is technically easier to get into – even if your GPA is low, your app is strong in a lot of ways. Good luck!!

Oberlin - low reach
Tufts - reach
Cornell - higher reach
Bates - unsure
Skidmore - match
Muhlenberg - low match
Bucknell - unsure
American - low match
Northeastern - match
BC - low reach
Goucher - safety

Thank you guys so much for your feedback!

@tarmiriel: The problem with AP Calc (besides the fact that math is by far my worst subject) is that I don’t have the pre-requisite for it.
Also, thanks for your advice on the supplement! It was really helpful. I’d like to think that I’m Conservatory level, but probably not.

check out hendrix college, an incredible hidden gem (not so hidden any more)
and muhlenberg is amazing…which is already on your list!

That’s a good suggestion, thanks! (: I’ll add it to my list.
Yeah, I toured Muhlenburg in April and had a very nice experience.

Also, I got my official transcript in the mail today and found out that I actually have a 91.1 (hooray!). I don’t think that makes much of a difference, but there it is anyway.

it’s probably different for a vocalist – ask your conductor, maybe? but yeah, I decided personally it wasn’t worth the effort for me to make a tape.

Late reply (sorry, I was on vacation), but I asked my conductor and he seemed to think it was a good idea. Hopefully he’s right!
