Here's a summary, what are my chances for Princeton and Stanford:
SAT: 2310 (M-800, CR-760, W-750)
SAT II: Biology-780, Math IIC-800, Chemistry-780
GPA: 4.76 (probably top 3 w/ class size of 410)
AP's - Comp Sci A (5); Calculus BC (5); US Hist. (5); Chemistry (5); English Language and Composition (5); Art History (5); taking 4 more AP courses as a senior, and multivariable calculus
Background: Asian male

EC's: Cross Country 9th-12th (varsity in 11th&12th), Math club 9th-12th (secretary 12th grade), several math competition awards (not first place tho), a couple of piano awards, paid job at library, Math Honor Society, named Edward J. Bloustein Scholar (awarded to top several kids in each school by the state)
Pretty good recs (I'm guessing), OK essay for Princeton, pretty unique essay for Stanford about filmmaking and my dream of becoming a film producer
Weaknesses: lack of leadership positions except math club secretary, cross country takes up way too much time so not too many other EC's, Asian male

Hooks - I live in the Princeton area (is that a hook at all?)

Cross Country can really help you if you've gone to Meet of Champions, but if not it probably won't do much for you, unless your a captain, or were a team MVP. Cross Country really only ends up being a serious hook for kids like Craig Forys, Matt Ciambriello, and Brian Leung... Your SAT's are pretty mediocre too for an asian male trying for HYPS. I just don't see anything that distinguishes you from other asian candidates with great grades and SAT's maybe if you have a killer essay it might be the difference, either way I think you'll end up at a great school, even if its not Princeton or Stanford, there are plenty of awesome schools out there.

um any sport will help you. it doesnt matter how good you are unless you show commitment to it, like you played it for 4 years. and team captain and mvp doesnt matter because some schools have awesome sports programs with many people and some schools have ****ty programs with a couple of people where it is easier to be captain and mvp. and doing a sport if your asian helps you out if your asian because there are barely any asians who do sports so this dude will definately stand out from the crowd. Alcatraz21990 is a troll.
to the OP i think you have a good chance at getting into princeton and stanford, but they are ivys so its really unpredictable. good luck

I noticed something in this thread that I had posted a thread about a while ago, but that nobody picked up on. I'm a white male from Northern Jersey thinking of applying to Princeton, and people tell me that its a disadvantage that I live in NJ. Is that true? If it is it doesnt seem very fair.

It's certainly an ADVANTAGE, because ivies tend to accept large numbers of kids from the northeast. Also i live in central jersey and a disproportionate # of kids go to princeton from our school each yr (like 7-10 in a class of over 400), so living in nj will never count against you (so i guess that is a hook after all).

"hey btw, since you want to become a filmmaker, have you looked at USC? apparently they have a killer program."
-yeah, but being asian my parents would kill me if I told them. better to apply to USC grad school for film producing.

Princeton and Stanford are so random, it's pointless to even ask what your chances are. They're better odds than the average applicant, but YOU NEVER KNOW WITH THESE SCHOOLS. They are high reaches for any applicant. but anyways, I'd guess ~30% chance at both schools

"Mediocre for an asian"? A 2310 is amazing, are you assuming that it's expected for asians to hit a 2400 to even be CONSIDERED as applicants?

Chances at those top schools can't be determined. You have the stats to get you in for consideration, but with a lack of a big hook like international awards/URM/mega legacy nobody knows

Yeah, seriously, 2310--mediocre? Please tell me that's a joke. Anything above 2250, and they consider you as in the tippytop bracket of SATs, I believe.

So yea...I realize 2310 is decent, but far from stellar (I think 2310 is slightly in the low end of the range for non-athletes who get accepted to HYPS). But will the rest of my app (like the 5's I got on all my AP's) be able to compensate in terms of standardized testing?
