Chance for transfer

I will be a freshman this year at Wright State in Ohio. I am in the honors program and have 18 credit hours. My major is political science, but I am likely going to enter the priesthood. My ACT score was a 23, and my high school gpa was a 3.6. I was extremely involved with football and baseball, and I was extremely involved with politics and other programs within the community. What are my chances as a transfer student? or should I hold off and just wait to apply for law school? Thanks!

Lucky for you I just happen to be a junior at Notre Dame who transferred in after my freshman year at Creighton University. First of all, I think there are a few things you should do. Are you thinking at all of becomming a Holy Cross priest or not really? If so, you would need to get in touch with their people and apply both to Old College (the seminary for undergrads) as well as to Notre Dame. I can help you with finding the right people if you like because I am also discerning the priesthood, even though I am not currently in Old College.

As for transferring, it really is more about how you do in college and what classes you have rather than your high school grades or test scores. Those really are only meant to predict how well you do in college, but obviously college grades are a far better predictor of how well you will do in college. The most important thing you can do, if you haven't yet, is get in touch with transfer admissions and talk about what classes you need to take. They will approve your courses for transfer which is really nice because that means that they will transfer to Notre Dame no matter what (it won't be like Boston College who accepted half of my credits....not like it matters, they were my backup anyways).

Now, assuming you have the proper classes and have approved all of them with the admissions office, the magic number to get into Notre Dame appears to be a 3.5 GPA. I only know of one exception to this rule and that was with a kid who was a legacy transferring in from Stanford and was accepted as a freshman, so that is a different circumstance.

I am not sure how much looking into Holy Cross changes admissions, if at all, but I wouldn't count on it helping you. What I will tell you is that the ball is truly in your court. I do think that you can transfer in but it is going to be completely up to you. You have to get the right courses and you have to get the GPA (at least a 3.5, higher is better though since transfer admissions is getting more selective) but if you do that I definately think you have a good shot.

I hope that helps some. Please feel free to PM or email me if you have any problems or questions about the process, I am more than willing to help. Good luck!
