U of Deleware offers a great path for Chemical Engineering Majors, and also my interest of studying abroad in Germany! But, I am concerned that I may not be accepted and want to increase my chances if need be. I would appreciate if you could tell me where I need to improve to make my chances better, or if I am on the right track. If you honestly think U of Deleware is out of reach, could you recommend any other universities that may be a good fit for me? Thank You!

All you need to do is get your scores up! Not sure if UDel requires subject tests for engineering; look into that. You’re very ahead of schedule. Good luck!

You look like a strong applicant! I would even consider applying to Delaware’s honors program. Also, have you looked at Drexel and Lehigh? Machts gut! (that’s PA German, not sure if it’s proper “high” German, but the sentiment in the same!)

[This program at Drexel](<a href=“Drexel Global,Programs”>Drexel Global,Programs) seems very fitting and interesting - probably the best I have found thus far! What are my chances at Drexel?

I would say your chances at Drexel are also good. And 2 things about Drexel (my D applied to both Drexel and UDel) - 1) Their programs are co-ops, meaning you work as you learn, getting valuable experience and sometimes, money. It means a different academic calendar, because after freshman year, you are there year -round, basically. and 2) Although tuition is pricey, they offer a lot of scholarship money, especially to students in neighboring states. Are you in NJ by any chance? They like to draw students away from Rowan’s chem eng program with merit dollars!

oops - just saw catria’s post - why do you think Drexel is a low match?

I’ve been spelling Delaware wrong this whole time! Usually spell check corrects spelling errors like that I apologize. But that is definitely something I need to take into account! I think it is how I’ve learned to pronounce it which has carried over to grammatical aspects!

Both Drexel and UDel are private schools, so out of state doesn’t matter. FYI, UDel, Drexel and Lehigh are in fairly close proximity to each other - about 100 miles from Del to Lehigh, and Drexel sits in between, so you could visit all three easily in one trip.

That is an odd, yet very convenient fact! As I look further into all three schools I will definitely consider visiting all three if I ever have the opportunity to!

Harlem shake, huh? I just heard an interview on NPR about the original Harlem “shaker.” I forgot his name, but he says he just wishes people would do it right. He intended the dance to mimic the DT’s of an alcoholic! Dubious college connection, wouldn’t you say? Still fun to watch…

And I’m sure there are other good engineering schools out there, maybe even some closer to home for you. I only mentioned these since you were looking at Delaware. My son is at an engineering academy hs now, and these are the schools he’s considering. But we live in NJ, so…

Well I really appreciate your help! I wish your son the best! I seem to be very interested in Drexel for some reason… Graduation isn’t for a while however, but New Jersey seems like a great state for attending college!

Your spell checker might be set to ignore capitalized words. You can change that.

By the way, a spell checker won’t catch a real word that is the wrong word. That’s why I can earn a living as a wordworker. I remember proofreading a safety manual for a company that builds power plants. The first sentence: In case of emergency, stay clam.

It actually was set to ignore capitalized words! I usually proofread a little more carefully in more formal situations, but I guess if my intention was to make a good impression I should have looked a little more carefully. However, I am not trying to make myself look better than I actually am, and it is true I occasionally do make spelling errors. If your occupation is to find errors in spelling, then I believe you should appreciate individuals like me who provide you with material you can work with! If that affects my admission though it is definitely something I need to take into consideration. I find “stay clam” very humorous, however!

Good luck to you too, schlaubaerchen! My son is also a sophomore, so maybe you will run into each other in one of these great northeast engineering schools! He is very interested in the German language as well (though it is not available at his hs), partly due to family heritage and partly due to his love of killing Nazi zombies! Feel free to PM me if I can help you navigate this area any further!
