University of Michigan
Northeastern University
University of North Carolina Chapel Hill
Ohio State University

White Female, Illinois
Competitive public school
ACT: 30
GPA UW: 3.72
Rank: Around top 15%
Took mostly AP and honors. Sr yr sched will be all AP

4 Years: Badminton
2 Years: NHS
3 Years (Hopefully 4): Service club at my school
1 Year: Volunteer at animal shelter (Something that I thought kind of sticks out- I volunteer like 15 hours a week there, and my family runs a farm, so we have a strong animal background. Maybe this shows consistency/my passion? Idk.)
2 Years: Volunteered through an organization that informed teens about safe driving
A few other awards and stuff that I can't remember right now

I think my recs will be really good. And I plan to put alot of effort into the essays so hopefully that will pay off.

My ACT score would be a 31, but the writing brought it down. Should I retake it one more time to bump that up? Would I even have time to? (Next possible date is Sept. 8th and I want to do EA, so I don't know if I could get the results in time)

Also, my GPA has a slight downward trend (Like 2 B's a year, then Jr year I had like 3). Does this hurt my chances? :/

So what do you think?

UNC and Umich would be a slight reach, northeastern would be a high match, and ohio state is a safe match.

Parent here-

To be honest, UNC would not be a slight reach. It only takes 18% out of state and while you have good numbers, being white and female (I think they have an imbalance…like 60% female) will not help. It will be a major long shot, I’m afraid, especially since your scores are in their mid-range.

Like Loncria said, you should be in good shape for Ohio State. Michigan has a higher acceptance rate and less of an issue with out of state applicants than UNC. You should apply asap there if you are seriously interested. Northeastern probably is a high match.

Was there something going on in your life that contributed to the downward trend? If so have someone write about it-like your counselor. You could retake and send in the scores when they come in. They should look at the ones from the September date. Is the ACT composite a 31? Because that’s what counts.

Congratulations on a fine resume and good luck!

Collegeboard says their act range is 27-32. I thought it was good to be in the middle? Am I missing something here? I know the lower end can be attributed to AA but I didn’t think that was the case all the time. Is there anything else I can do to strengthen my resume at this point? Any other colleges I should look at? Thanks

Any more opinions? Other schools I should apply to? Really lost atm, any help appreciated :/

Hi ML-

Not getting too many responses, I see. Posts like this are all over the UNC board:

Take a look at the OOS admits last year and you will see that they are at the top of the applicant pool, and it is worse for girls. If you love UNC, give it a shot. Just realize it will be really tough to get in there. To have a decent chance you need to be in the top 25% as far as test scores go and you really should be in the top 10% of your class as well, at a minimum. (77% of the last class was top 10%.) They supposedly only admitted 14% OOS last year.

The rest of your list looks more attainable and UM is great, especially if you are in state? You say you go to a competitive public school. Have you talked to your counselor? Where do the grads from your school tend to be accepted? Does your school have naviance? Also, are finances an issue?

Good luck with your list. I know it’s hard to get it all nailed down. My S '13 is trying to wrap up his list too.

Thanks so much for answering back :)

I live in Illinois, so OOS for all of these. Probably won’t bother applying to UNC anymore xD. But yeah, my high school is top 30 in the state, and a bunch of kids go to top schools each year. (I never understood if this was to my advantage or disadvantage?). Also my class size is pretty big (like 700 kids) and I’m 100 or something. Does the class size play into effect at all?

Not sure about naviance. And finance isn’t an issue.

Again, thanks so much for taking the time out to answer! I really appreciate it.
