Chance for URM

How much will being an URM help in admissions?
I'm Hispanic and currently have a 3.7 uw GPA/29 ACT. I'm also in-state.

Any help would be great.

It’s hard to say how much URM helps because they are not allowed to say how much it helps. Based on last year’s essay question, they have an interest in people who have a community involvement that they can bring to U-M to foster a greater sense of community on campus. So it is not just being hispanic but it is the values you hold from your experience in this hispanic community. Even if it doesn’t help at all, your stats will give you a good chance for admission but not a slam dunk.

All right, thanks for the input.

I should probably add that I hold dual-citizenship (Switzerland and Colombia) and a green card. I’m also fluent in French, English, and Spanish.

With those grades I would think most students would be somewhere in “reach” range. Thanks to you being IS, a URM, and having the dual citizenship + knowing multiple langauges I think that will help you out a lot. They eat that kind of stuff up. Getting your ACT up couldn’t hurt though.

I was looking on the U of M 2011 Common Data Set and it said that racial/ethnic status was not considered in admissions, so I would think that means being a URM would only help if you could write a cool essay on it.

well of course they say it doesn’t help at all, I don’t think Michigan wants another Supreme Court Case

So they say it doesn’t matter, then they preach all around campus about diversity and have diversity councils and but up posters about the racism in Glee (no joke). So if they can take a little hit grade wise with applicants here and there to make the campus more “diverse”, they will.

I agree with Mike. I live 10 minutes from UM’s campus and they do advocate diversity a lot.

I retook the ACT on Saturday and am looking at probably a 31 - 32. My June SAT will most likely be 2350+ (2370 January).

Any extra help?

I’m an OOS URM and I was waitlisted (no word yet) with a 3.3 UW GPA and a 1820 SAT–I was pleasantly surprised to say the least. So, it proves that anything is possible!

Really?! Wow that’s really neat. Many of my friends got waitlisted/rejected, and I go to a feeder. (my school’s down the street from umich)

Hopefully you get in!!

Yeah, sarahm would have probably been rejected sooner (no offense) if she wasn’t a URM.

There are probably other factors too, but I’m just saying

If you got a 2350 on your SAT then don’t even bother sending in your ACT scores, because a 29-32 is really low compared to a 2350.

Being a URM does help. Everyone knows it, but it just can’t be explicitly stated or written.

I actually received an offer of admission this morning. From the looks of PurpleDuckStar, this class looks like one for the books. See you on campus! And aahs12, I hope you get in! Thanks so much for your support :)

Congrats. Ann Arbor is one of coolest places to live in. Although it’s kind of a small town there are tons of restaurants.

Hopefully I’ll get in for the class of 2016. :)

1st of all, its PurpleDuckMan. MAN! Haha

2nd, I am amazed you got in, don’t waste this opportunity. Hope you do well at Umich.

Lol thanks guys!!

I’m Hispanic, out of state (Ca) and really hoping I get in for class of 2016. Good luck to you OP!

And good luck to you too! Hopefully we’ll get in!!
