I am currently a student at Galveston College in Galveston, TX. By the time I would start at UT in Fall of '09, I will have all of my core classes completed. I would like to get students and people who have worked in admissions opinions on my chances of being admitted as a transfer student.

My current GPA: 4.0 (and I see no reason why it should drop)
All core courses will be complete.
Hoping to be admitted into the College of Liberal Arts as an English Major.
I am a student ambassador for GC and take part in many extra-curricular activities.
I was extremely active in student activities in High School, mainly the speech and debate team, where I placed 3rd and 4th in my events and was elected vice president of the team. There are many other activities that would simply take up too much space.
I also have volunteered at the zoo and at an haunted attraction that collected food cans for the harvest food bank.
I have two very strong letters of recommendation and I have excellent skills in writing, so I am sure my essays will be top notch.

I will be taking two winter mini-semester courses (a mini-semester is during winter break and is less than a month long) so I may apply and receive an admissions decision as quickly as possible.

I am an in-state student and have a sympathetic story and background that I hope will also help me to gain extra financial aid (with the help of a special circumstances form) and scholarships.

For those who do not realize, UT does not consider high school GPA, rank, and SAT scores when considering admission for transfer students.

Just to confirm, you want Austin and not another UT campus, right? I’d say you’re in. I’ve never heard of anyone with a 3.5+ not getting into COLA, but in case my app gets denied for Spring 2010, I’ll be sure to let you know. lol Are you taking any honors classes or are you in Phi Theta Kappa? With your GPA you may not need it, but it wouldn’t hurt either.

How many units do you have completed so far? UT requires 30 to transfer, although you can apply before that if the remaining courses are in progress. The Fall 2010 deadline is March 1st, but even if you submit your application tomorrow, don’t expect to hear anything until at least April. You could definitely start working on your essays (A & E for transfers) to give your self plenty of time to polish them up and really make them stand out, although again, your GPA is pretty much all they care about.

Yes, I am going for Austin. Galveston College does not have honors courses and I don’t think they have Phi Theta Kappa, but I can’t say I’m 100% sure about that.

I have 9 credits completed so far, 6 from last spring (I got back into school slowly haha) plus 3 from Indiana University (from a past life). Fyi, everyone I’ve asked says that UT will most likely accept the credits from IU. Currently, I am enrolled in 17 hours and I will be taking two classes over winter break, which equal another 6 credits. All of that equaling 32 hours. Then the spring is basically about me becoming core complete.

I want to send in my application as early as possible so that I may get an admissions decision as early as possible. This gives me a slight edge as most fall transfers won’t be able to receive an admissions decision until they have sent in the grades for all required hours until May. Plus, I need housing, so I will be more likely to get it the earlier I send everything in.

Well applying early as a transfer does not mean you will hear early. As I said, you’ll find out around April, maybe even May. The only people who hear quickly are the automatic 10% Freshman admits. The only advantage you’ll have is not having to submit the final spring transcript for confirmation of your admission if you had applied with under 30, although you will eventually have to submit it to ensure you didn’t have a significant drop in your GPA (which seems unlikely).

So, the reason why you have a 4.0 is because you only took 3 classes. UT should be a piece of cake completing 30 semester hours in a year. Haha.

I got a 4.0 because I studied hard and received perfect marks. That is not affected by how many classes I take. As of now, I have received 100’s on all of my tests and assignments this semester, and I am taking 5 hard classes and a yoga class, totaling 17 hrs. You should not need me to tell you that is not an easy task. I’m not sure if you were being insulting in your remark, edmfanatiq, but I’m going to assume this is just another case of misunderstanding via the internet.

I study very hard and achieve anything I put my mind to. I was just hoping for constructive criticism and feedback.
