chance for Vandy-Candy :)

Hi, so for a long time I've been thinking to apply to Vanderbilt, and I think I will for RD round. Please don't take this lightheartedly; it's really important for me if you could provide your honest opinion.

SAT I : 1900
SAT II: 650 Chem, 720 Math IIC
AP: chem (4), enviro (5), us history (4)

Senior year courseload:
ap BC calc
ap stat
ap span
ap bio
ap eng
ap gov & pol

ec:
President of service club
VP of science bowl

Awards: AP scholar w/ honors, honor roll

teacher rec: I guess alright
counselor rec: alright I guess too

essay: on chemistry...is this a bad idea? I didn't prepare for SAT II..so I was a bit slow. My true persona isn't reflected in my scores. I did pretty well in the class, but I don't know what happened in the exams.

what’s your GPA and just your math/critical score?

oh, edit:

^ I pressed enter to move to the next line, but apparently the same version became the post.

Here is the true EDIT:
WGPA: 4.6 UWGPA: about 3.6

^adding on
CR+math= 1230

The GPA falls in line, but the M/CR score is a little low. Are you able to take the December ACT? If so, I’d try it out. Otherwise make sure you write a kick ass essay!

Good luck!

Thanks  I’ll try my best.

Where are you from?

NC, Charlotte area

Thank you. Just being curious. :)

And you said your GPA was weighted from a 3.6 to a 4.6 with taking 3 AP courses. How is that possible? I hope I’m not coming across rude; I am just curious.

I think you have me wrong.
My unweighted gpa is 3.6
weighted gpa is 4.6
In 11th grade I took 6 AP classes. I took 4 AP exams at the end. I was new to AP testing during that time, so I did not try to overwhelm myself. I did not mention the 4th AP exam b/c I received a 3 on it…so it really did not make sense for me to include that type of info. My numbers are already on the edge…why take a chance?
I expected my weighted to increase…but it only did by 0.2 points (I was pretty shocked since I worked very hard). I think I took a lot of useless honors and standard classes for my school’s requirement deal before junior year…this severly hurt me in the long run as you can see.

Hope this explains for my low gpas.

Yeah everything looks pretty good except your SAT, which is really low for Vandy. You really need to take it again or the ACT to have a better shot. You may get in the way you are now, but I wouldn’t count on it.

I don’t think that Montalvo understands NC’s weighting system–and I think that’s what he or she is asking about. For most NC schools, an A (or a 96, in some areas) is a 4.0 weighted in a standard class, 5.0 weighted in an honors classes, and a 6.0 in an AP class. Several courses are not available as anything but standard under state policy (such as the first two courses in foreign language). This is in contrast with many other areas, where every honors or AP class “adds” some amount to your overall weighted GPA (like +0.05 for every honors class).

So it’s probably pretty obvious that we’re from the same state, though we’re from completely different areas of it. I’m applying for Peabody College Education and Human Development and I’m assuming you’re applying for the College of Arts and Sciences… so I don’t think we’re competing with each other.

I found the ACT easier than the SAT, so I second looking into that. I’m impressed by your senior course-load… I would go ahead and apply, there are no extra essays on the Vanderbilt supplement; all you have to lose is some (of your parents’) money. I came across this Vanderbilt video not too long ago; you might find it helpful: [YouTube - Insider’s guide to admissions](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKARNadxshU)

I’m rather proud of my ec’s, but my GPA’s much lower than yours. Maybe you have some advice for me? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/vanderbilt-university/1037748-too-dumb-hodumb.html</a> I think I was vague enough that you won’t be able to google me or anything without a lot of effort.

You applying to UNC? Maybe we’ll see each other there if we don’t get into Vanderbilt. :)

Yea lol. UNC is my number 1 choice, but I’m also really interested in Vandy. Most of the ppl in my class have tougher courseload (can you believe it??). I hope no one from my school (or state haha) is applying to Vandy. I am really frustrated at my score, but I don’t know what to do. Unfortunately, the deadline for ACT registration has passed. I wouldn’t have registered anyways since I don’t want to deal with a different format. I agree that ACT may seem a lot easier to some, but I really don’t even want to think about that…since I’ve lost my chance. :)

^ noticed that you are applying. I’m glad that we are not competing against one another also haha. But really…I think my chances are pretty slim.

I think a hundred and some of last year’s incoming class came from NC, so it’s not like no one’s accepted. I don’t think I have much of a chance either, but all we can do is apply and see! :)

yea lol. But then the waiting period would be too long for RD ppl. Now I wished I had applied early…both to get my decisions sooner and also to have a better chance.

Anyways, what do you think about my essay topic: Chemistry. Is it safe to discuss or should I avoid it?

Thanks! Didn’t know that many ppl actually enrolled at Vandy. Hmm, now I’m really hoping fewer ppl apply from NC lol. :)

what essay are you talking about? vandy’s supplement doesn’t have an essay!

I look at it like this: I’m putting in all this effort for college applications up till the end of December (and I get my NC State Decision December 15th), in January I have to do all of that crazy financial aid stuff, I get February off from college stuff, I get my UNC decision in March, everywhere else gets back to me in April, and then I have less than a month to pick a school. That way, while I’d like to know sooner, I know I wouldn’t wish the process to go any faster; it’s already busy enough.

I’ve not been too sure what to talk about in my essay either. I guess it depends on what you plan to talk about in your essay. Is chemistry your prospective major? I do know that they ultimately don’t want to learn more about anions and cations, but about who you are… and you can do that with about any topic. I’ve read that you should address things like why your chemistry score was lower than expected outside of essays… and that you should get someone to read your essay and ask them “what does it say about me?”

lol I’m not getting my hopes up… it’s probably all of those darn Wake County kids. =P

simone: don’t you like need one essay atleast for common app?
aig: Haha ^ lol I don’t know about wake too much, but my school’s pretty well ranked since I’m in Charl. Unfortunately, for unc, I didn’t discuss my low scores for chem, and my app has already been turned in. I’m going into biochem, so it is a related subject. I’m very fond of it, and at the time I just couldn’t think of anything else. I basically wrote how the subject has changed me during my final years at HS. If i didn’t provide any explanation to counter my exam grades…would that hurt me? What do you all think?
