Hello!
I am currently looking to apply at the University of Michigan, UT-Austin, Indiana University, UNC, University of Virginia, Emory University, Rice University, and Cornell. Looking to go into the business schools of these universities.
32 ACT (29M,28S,36R,35E)
3.9 GPA UW (My school doesn’t do weighted grades)
Top 10% of Class
Hispanic/Caucasian Male.
3 Years of Varsity Volleyball
3 Years of Minor DECA Involvement
8 AP Courses throughout High School.
Job at Champs Sports; one of the top sellers in our branch.
400~ of Community Service as both a Volunteer Park Leader and an Usher for my local theatre.
NHS Member
Owned and operated my own business where I bought and sold desirable luxury clothing and sneakers globally for my entire high school career. (Most important to me, writing essay on this.)
Would really appreciate if you could give me an idea of which of my schools mentioned above will be safe/reach/etc.
Or if you have any other recommendations on business schools that would be great for me considering my stats.
Thanks!
What is your senior year schedule? Have you taken any SAT subject tests? What state are you in? I think your work experience is very impressive but I fear that the math section of the ACT is low for a business applicant. I would also look at Villanova, Bucknell, and Lehigh.
Senior year schedule is AP Chemistry, AP Calculus AB, AP Psychology, Marketing 1, Marketing 2, AP Literature, and AP Spanish Language. I am in Wisconsin, general public school. Also applying to UW-Madison but not extremely worried about being rejected there as I constantly see students with 26/27 ACT getting in. Thanks for your opinion, much appreciated.

University of Michigan- Match
UT-Austin- Match/ High Match
, Indiana University- Safety
UNC-High Match
University of Virginia- High Match
Emory University- High Match/ Low Reach
Rice University- Low Reach
Cornell- Low Reach
I personally feel that unless you get significant aid at Rice it’s a waste of money to go there for business, as placement in Houston is your only prospect. Being half Hispanic will help, but only some.
UM, UNC, and UVA are increasingly tough admits for OOS applicants. I wouldn’t consider any of them a solid match unless I were in-state.
Note that Rice does not have an undergraduate business school, but it does have an excellent business minor whose courses are taught by faculty at the Jones Graduate School of Business (i.e., Rice’s MBA program). Rice also has a growing Econ department, and the Econ major is already one of the most popular on campus. The notion that Rice–the #14 ranked university in the land–only places its grads in Houston businesses is way off base.
Defintely pining hard for U of M at the moment. So hopefully I get one of those out of state spots. Hoping for some opinions on Early Decision; use for one of my reach schools (Cornell), or one of the high match schools (U of M, UVA)? Logic tells me to go safe, but a equal part of me wants to shoot high. Or does Early Decision really not sway the decision that much?
