Would the Business school be a fair chance? Va tech IR&E data show this is mid range.
Reasonable chance but science would be easier. Has he not already applied (worse odds regular decision than early action)
I am a senior from central VA. I am applying to engineering for compsci. M, White, middle class.
GPA: 3.3, W: 3.8 (both approx, depends on this year) I know that is low, but I had a concussion junior year and missed a lot of school, which both my counselor and I explained in my app.
SAT: 1490 (M:730 E&W: 760)
APs completed: Compsci A, Human Geo, Calc AB, Lang, Physics I
APâs this year: Calc BC, Chem, Litcomp, Govât
Extracurriculars: In a touring alt rock band, race mountain bikes at national level and sponsored for it by several companies, build computers/ hacking competitions, marching band, varsity swimming, volunteering.
Honors: NHS, BETA? idk if that counts
Dad went there
Taken 2 languages
Took the compsci AP, got a 4
hi! my class rank is in the top 35%. Do you think that I have a good chance or is it 50/50? hope that helps!
mfmtb01 - It may be difficult getting into engineering but hopefully your essays and explanations give you a bump.
subhankar01 - impossible to predict on just a class rank. I would say 50/50 in general is more like about top 20% in class. Top 35% of class is on the lower end - but I have no idea how competitive school your talking about or GPA. I would say GPA weighted in most schools 3.9 is about 50/50.
subhandkar01 - I actually looked up what average acceptance was for 2019 in Dept of Science (which is easier acceptance than if engineering) to give a more normal non-engineering acceptance level.
Average weighted GPA: 4âŠ05
Average SAT: 1279
I would assume these numbers would be in the top 20% in most schools.
I would also predict these numbers will creep up this year to more of a 4.1 GPA and 1290 SAT.
Will mid year GPA (trending up) help in my sonâs case? He applied EA for Biology major with WGPA 3.8 (ranked top 35% of his class in Loudoun Co) and SAT 1370. He is expecting to have mid year WGPA around 4.3 (3 AP and 2 DE classes). By the way, does class rank play an important role for VT admissions?
@PLO2020 VT doesnât consider class rank, per their common data set and pubished info re: holistic review. Itâs my understanding that grades and test scores submitted using the coalition profile are used for admissions decisions, and that final grades and transcript (which would reflect the mid-year bump) are reported and sent after offer of admission.
IMO, your best measure of chance of acceptance remains the data the HS guidance office collects/provides via Naviance or other tools re: acceptance history from their HS and how that compares to your sonâs stats.
Thanks for the reply, do you know how much tech cares about test scores? that seems to be the only thing Iâm really above the curve on
Test scores, rigor of coursework, and GPA are all strongly considered according to the CDS.
The most recent CDS posted is from 2017-18 though. While I doubt that test scores have dropped down a notch re: consideration, it is possible. More and more universities are focusing on course rigor and GPA a little bit more than test results.
They stated at information sessions this past spring that they calculate their own GPA based on the course rigor, so your weighted and unweighted GPAs that are calculated by your HS, arenât really what gets leveraged.
Your weighted is low, but your SAT, ECs and essay seem good. Are you OOS? If so, itâs a slight reach, but if youâre in state then its a match.
Thatâs my schoolâs weighted system. I havenât weighted it out for Virginia Tech yet. I am out of state.
For most colleges, my calculated weighted GPA would be 4.08 (using an online college calculator), and my unweighted would be a 3.65.
My son applied to VT Engineering, Early Action. VT is his first choice school - heâs heard from all his other schools so far (except for VT).
3.5 weighted GPA (very high rigor - has completed 3 AP Calc classes, including Differential Equations, 2 AP computer science classes)
1380 SAT
32 ACT
Out of state (Colorado)
We know his GPA is the weakest part of his profile, but it is what it is. We think VT is a reach school for him.
Waiting until Feb 22nd is killing us!! Any thoughts on his chances?
@HopefulyHokieDad Where does that 3.5 GPA put him in his class? GPA will be recalculated by VT based on AP and Honors classes, anyway, so class rank would give a better picture. Engineering is very tough for OOS and based on last yearâs over-acceptance, there is an expectation that this year will be tougher than normal. Good luck!
Just an additional point. Was there a reason for your son not to apply Early Decision? If it was clearly his first choice, I believe it would have increased his chances.
@HokieCrazy Iâm embarrassed to say that I donât know his class rank! I encouraged him to apply ED, but he was anxious about applying anywhere ED knowing that he couldnât change his mind. I decided not to push it with him - itâs tough being a 17 year old kid these daysâŠ
That makes sense. In any case, VTech is a match (slight reach bc OOS).
Your SAT is on the lower side I think now more upper 1200âs to low 1300âs. Also you mentioned essay. VT has the 4 short essay prompts and they donât even look at the one long essay from coalition OOS I would say itâs 50/50
I think his SAT is right there his class rigor seems what they would want. Maybe if his EC and essays are good it will push him over Good Luck
