Interesting article on overacceptance at Tech last year. I still think it will effect admissions this year

So are you saying a top 15% in class is a shoo- in. My son is top 20% with above avg stats but not engineering and I still think hes on the bubble. due to the above article from todays paper.

Not a shoe in but Odds would be favorable. At 20% it’s going to be impossible to predict.

Chances on my post above?

Gogu. You look pretty good but with over acceptance last year in biology no one really knows how this year will shape out. If your top 15% in class I think may be good. Above that a tossup.

@cbl1 , how about one more. VT was one of two “stretch” schools for my son (because of Computer Science major).

OOS NJ
Early Action
SAT 1270 (700 math)
GPA 4.26
Great extracurriculasrs and volunteering
Employed - Social media job and umpiring

He is 9/9 so far for YESES, but I have a feeling the streak stops here on Feb 22.

It’s gonna be 50/50. We have no idea how this year will go. Hold out hope it’s certainly possible.

Can you see a lot of qualified applicants (ex. WGPA close to 4.0 with SAT score close to 1350) not getting in VT for 2020? Will this be the most competitive year in VT history due to overenrollment in 2019 and increasing interest to the school?

I really think it depends on the major. Engineering has always been tough. My son knows a few that were accepted thru ED that were not top top students. I do think the SAT may go up a bit- avg was 1290 Mid 50% so may go up 10-20 pts. I do think essays and EC may play more role than in some other schools this size due to the specific short questions . According to the RTD the other day "This mistake was a one off and will not effect admissions since they want to get to the 30K level soon. This is just my opinion though

When we visited VT in November, several questions were asked about the over-enrollment issue last year, and how it will impact acceptance rates this year. The AO giving the presentation was pretty adamant that (1) VT was planning to grow anyway and (2) the freshman class this year will not be smaller as a result of last year’s snafu. The message was don’t worry.

But I definitely think VT will alter its yield models based on last year’s acceptance rates. I read that last year VT engineering based admissions offers on 27% acceptance rate, but the reality was 33% accepted. It seems logical that fewer offers will be made this year across the board (but particularly in over-enrolled majors) in anticipation of these higher yield rates continuing. Quotes from several articles suggest that. The article linked above states, “With more data and better data and more accurate data, our models are going to get better and better and better, and therefore we’ll be more successful in hitting our targets.” And from an earlier article in the Roanoke Times: “Tech officials are actively tweaking their model. Data from this last cycle will inform the university how students will behave moving forward.”

Higher yield = fewer offers needed to hit enrollment targets = higher stats needed to get an offer. So I definitely think the numbers will be impacted this year. Not sure by how much, though.

Agree with above and they told us same thing on our visit. There are many students who apply to UVA and Tech and get into both but decide on Tech. I think more last year did this and that can mess with yield

I think a lot chose VT over many schools last year. JMU had to go heavy into their waitlist. JMU also put out their early action a month ahead of schedule this year - most likely to improve yields.

1470 SS SAT, UW GPA:3.7, oos (studying abroad in India for high school due to family reasons), Doing A-levels
Btw A-levels are a rigorous British syllabus
ECs:
DIgitization project at an Indian government school (recognized by the Indian government)
Academic Exchange with Swedish high school, collaboration on a climate change project
UN Filmmaking Project Showing differences between my school and an underprivileged government school nearby
Boxing for two years (More of a passionate hobby that is really important to me)
School Play on Bullying
I did badly in my 1st sem (of 12th) because of dengue fever, is VT understanding about those types of hindrances? Also, could someone please tell me my chances for engineering at VT?

Hopefully you have already applied early action with good essays on your experiences. Impossible to predict this year when it comes to engineering. You have a shot just no way to predict for sure.

ECs: Marching Band/ Concert Band ensembles. This includes numerous individual and group superior awards and honor band distinctions. This activity took almost all of my time, making it my only real EC. I accentuated the profound effect it had on my social development through HS in my supplements.

I think your going to get in as long as those essays were good and you applied early action.

How much a factor is the Northern Virginias bias? (Back when I applied, UVA was not a chance–but University of Richmond was better for me anyway)

Son is solid student but may need that flexibility to find out what the next phase will be
4.2 GPA (W)(top 15%)(competitive school)
1260 SAT-not a standardized test whiz (neither was I)
Good EC
Early Interest in biomedical business-but may be pre med
Pamplin Business school is quite competitive–interested in new Biomedical operations at Roanoke

Not being interested in business. I would think he would have a good shot at one of the biotech majors in department science.
