@jacksonmmurphy0 If the calculation you did is accurate then you’re closer now to the mean in terms of GPA, so that should be of benefit. Like I always post - check with your guidance dept. to see how you compare to past results from your school. No expert here, but my opinion is that standardized test scores are carrying less influence vs. course rigor and consistent academic performance. Your course rigor is your best hook it would seem.
Statistic:
For 2018 into Engineering 10333 applied, 6976 were accepted
Average SAT 706 math / 656 writing and avg. weighted high school gpa 4.18
Doesn’t look too promising for VA Tech engineering but maybe you’ll be one of the lucky ones accepted with lower than average stats. Fortunately, you already have a number of acceptances to good schools.
@kidzncatz We don’t know the scale or whether the GPA the OP posted is weighted. I’m just curious, and don’t mean any disrespect… your prior posts are all related to PA schools or generic issues, What influenced you to opine about VT admission chances? I’m trying to get a handle on what motivates some of the drive-bys.
@ShenVal18 One of my sons graduated from Virginia Tech (mechanical engineering), so I sometimes read the Virginia Tech threads., though I haven’t before posted to any of them. I’ve also responded to several of the OP’s other posts.
Do I have a good shot of getting into VTech. It is my No.1 option. I am a senior.
I wanna major in Civil Engineering. Also, I am North African. (If that helps…)

How do you rank in your class. Your gpa looks low but hard to tell from school to school. You have a lot of good things going for you.
I have a massive graduating class of 900. My school uses the decile system, so I am in the top 20%. (Probably in the middle of that, 15% or so)
My School released students stats who got accepted into Tech, and their average GPA was about 3.92. That is the only thing I am below average on, everything else I am above average with.
With engineering it’s going to be hard this year. You certainly have a decent chance but know way to know since your relying on a lot of holistic stuff.
@kidzncatz Gotcha, all good. There’s been some other past threads where posters have dropped in, lobbed a grenade of sorts, and then vanished (not the case with your post). The drive-bys as I call them always concern me since a lot of the posts on these forums are from teenagers, and I wonder how easily they can be influenced by what they read.
oh okay I appreciate the information
My major I applied to was Business IT, will that make admission chances easier?
Pamplin is easier to get accepted than engineering side
I have been asking everyone I can about Virginia Tech and I realized how much easier it is for people from Virginia compared to out of state. There are people getting accepted with substantially lower stats compared to the school averages. For example, I know a bunch of people who got accepted into ED with 1200 SATs.
Will emailing the Tech, or getting my counselor to email Tech help with my chances of getting admitted?
Also, I know that VTech allows for students to visit the school and get a decision on the spot. Is it possible for me to do that even after I submitted an EA Application?
@Volty123 I think you have a good chance. Your SAT are above avg and you have definitely taken hard classes. Hopefully you had good essays. I honestly dont think emailing admissions at this point would help with so many applications but you can try.
@Volty123 VT flat out says that they don’t want letters or emails from applicants, teachers, or guidance. The strength of your application will be the deciding factor. Instant Decision is a process that I believe is/was restricted to transfer students. Visting now won’t impact their decision.
Re: acceptance being easier for in-state applicants, VT is a land grant university so they are required to maintain a high level of in state students. GPA and score data that VT posts have a lot of details associated with them. I highly doubt that students are being admitted to engineering with 1200 on their SAT. For some other non-restricted majors it’s possible. Or if the applicant is 1st gen and underrepresented status then maybe. That said, it remains my opinion that schools are focusing more on course rigor and performance throughout high school than how a student did on a single test on a given date - especially when it’s common for higher income applicants to have attended SAT prep courses and taken the test multiple times. (Example: 2 kids, same HS, same coursework, same GPA. Kid 1 takes SAT with no prep, 1 time. Kid 2 takes 2 SAT prep courses and takes test 3 times. Kid 1’s SAT is 30 points below Kid 2. Does anyone really think Kid 2 is the superior student/applicant? This stuff really happens - I know kids who’s parents spent over $2,000 on prep courses and multiple SAT and ACT tests).
I have been getting tons of emails from VTech after I submitted my application. These emails are ranging from scholarship opportunities to saying happy birthday/new year. The weird thing is that I know people who also applied for EA but they are not getting these emails. Do these emails mean anything?
@Volty123 More than likely meaningless. Maybe the emails are going to junk/spam for others, maybe they didn’t include their correct email on some document where you did. I guess perhaps because you are 1st gen and could fit underrepresented criteria they could be staying in touch. Remember, lots of schools already have released their EA results, so VT might be just sending out marketing touches from time to time to certain segments of the application cohort.
(Word to the wise if you do get accepted… it’s VT, or Tech, or Virginia Tech, or VPI. You’ll get savaged by your classmates and upperclassmen if you refer to your school as VTech :)).
Or worse… VATech. Yuck.
