We can thank ESPN for that one…
My son’s senior mid-year unweighted GPA 3.67 (with 3 AP + 2 DE classes) is lower than junior GPA 3.85 (with 3 AP + 2 Honor classes). Will this affect his chance for EA admission significantly? By the way, his freshman GPA is 3.5 and sophomore GPA is 3.57.
@PLO2020 – Has your son been asked to submit mid-year grades? As far as I know, my son has not…
@aewlmom – His school GC will send out mid-year grades to the colleges he has applied automatically when the grades are available next week.
@PLO2020 Even though the guidance office may send them, I doubt admissions is going to do anything with the mid-year data. It’s my understanding that once the application is in, unless there is an app change request (incorrect data sent on initial app) then the next time VT will officially look at HS and test results is after student accepts.
They probably won’t look at them unless he is deferred or wait listed. I would think that they are deep into the process and may even be finalizing acceptances .
So it sounds like VT won’t even include student’s senior mid-year grades when recalculating GPA with their own method…
@PLO2020 Correct. It’s my understanding from digital and verbal interaction with VT admissions that they do not want nor look at anything post-application and prior decision unless it is a app change request, and those parameters are very specific.
It makes sense re: grades - realistically if a student has been performing well enough through Junior year in HS that they are in the mix for acceptance, a single add’l semester’s peformance shouldn’t have a substantial impact on their overall GPA. You’ve mentioned individual year’s GPA - admissions is going to look at cumulative average.
So I know this isnt exactly class of 2024, but I really need help! Im looking to transfer to VT from VCU next year as a sophomore and would love to see what your thoughts are about my chances of getting accepted into the business information technology program.
Im currently a freshman with a 3.3 gpa (low I know but first semester was hard but im working to bring it up!) and I had a 3.9 in HS and was in lots of clubs. I applied last year but was waitlisted, i dont know if that will affect my chances of getting in
@colleger2023 VT doesn’t post GPA stats for transfer students. Transfer acceptance rate for BIT has been in the 60% range for the past 5 years. Have you checked to see if the courses you took last semester and those you are taking this semester will transfer 1:1 to VT? You probably should know whether you are going to be behind your 2023 cohort if you are accepted. In terms of HS results, I’m pretty sure that ship has sailed.
You have a decent shot - you didn’t mention major. If Engineering your probably borderline (you never know).
Did you apply Regular Decision (which you won’t hear about until March) or Early Action (comes out in February). Early Action acceptance probably easier than Regular Decision (which pretty much fills out holes for each department).
regular decision engineering
Hi I’m a Senior in HS applying into Business undecided in the Pamplin School of Business at VT
Here are my stats:
GPA: 3.4UW with 6 honors classes and 3 APs (highly rated private school in Richmond)
ACT: 31
Many extracurriculars/leadership
In-state
White male
Both parents went to college
My Grandfather went so some legacy
What are my chances of getting in? Thanks so much!
I would count you borderline. GPA a little low but ACT is good. I’m thinking you will get in … hopefully you applied Early Action as that would help. I would be a little more worried Regular Decision.
Going to be tough - especially regular decision Engineering. I’m fearful they will be pretty full in engineering by that point.
cbl1, I applied Early Action. Thanks so much!
@nj130020 Another school you might want to consider is West Virginia University, which has rolling admissions. Still time to apply there, and your GPA and SAT scores exceed the requirements for out of state students.
I know people last year with slightly similar stats that got accepted. But again last year virginia tech over accepted a lot of people. Im hoping that doesn’t affect this years application chances
Last year they over accepted way too much students. Will that affect this year’s admissions. Maybe they will not accept as much to balance it out?
Will I get in for VT college of engineering in 2020?
