ACT=34
GPA=3.0 (started with Cs freshman & sophomore year and now with A’s and B’s)
100 volunteer hours
3.5 AP classes; 3.5 Honors classes
How do you get 1/2 an AP class? What is the year by year breakdown of your unweighted GPA?
Also, have you run the NPC for Boston University and are your parents and you okay with the result? In our experience it was not the most affordable school.
To me 3.0 seems quite low for BU. Your ACT is very good but I would be a bit surprised if this would overcome a 3.0.
1/2 an ap class is a one semester so class
So it’s half credit
Year by year is 2.7 by end of sophomore year, at end of first semester junior year it is a 3.0 and hopefully it will improve more after 2nd semester
What is your intended field of study? an upward trend is always good, but you will need to apply reach and safety schools. Check the Naviance data for your school, that is usually a good indicator of the required GPA from your school for a given university.
Before asking for a chance it is a good idea to get in the habit of looking up the class profile and/or common data set for the college to see if you are in the ballpark. In your case your GPA is well below average for BU. While your ACT is a point above average I don’t think it is enough to compensate for your GPA. It is fine to put in an application but understand that it is a big reach. https://www.bu.edu/admissions/about-bu/profile/
If you’re sure BU is the right school for you, I think your only chance would be to apply ED. Your GPA is fairly low, and while your ACT score is good, I’d say take it again and try to get it up around 34 or 35 to try and balance out your GPA. In all honesty though, im not sure it’s completely realistic based on the number and caliber of other applicants though. Best of luck!
