--I'm currently a Junior in high school but this is what I will have by next year; my main goal is U of I UC!--

Weighted GPA: 4.25 - 4.3
Unweighted GPA: 3.85
Class Rank: 35/405 -> will try to get it even lower if possible.

ACT Score: 32

6 AP Classes
7 Honors Classes

Notes:
-- Consistent A grades in these classes, sometimes B.
-- Always taken highest math AND science course available.
-- Prior to AP Literature, I have only taken normal English classes.
-- Completely amped my Senior Year, not taking it easy.
-- Was not able to take AP Calculus, but will take Honors Pre-Calculus.

I really want to get into UIUC; I do have some family that had gone there for Engineering of that helps. Any tips? Higher ACT?

About top 10% percent with good engineering based classes–by the way I want to major in computer science–seems good. Thanks for the chance! More needed!

Will do, I just chanced you though. So a college visit and maybe even a summer program there, how does that sound? Is that what you meant by interest?

I’m going to see if I can start a Tech or Coding Club next year just to show my love for Computer Science.

Where is your home state?
There is EA but not ED for UIUC. Assuming oos for all, you should be a match for Purdue and Wisconsin. High match to low reach for UIUC depending on major. The mid 50 ACT for UIUC Engineering is around 31-34 and the average admission GPA is 3.9. You will have a better chance if you can improve both your GPA and ACT score.

I think that being in-state will help make Illinois a match/high match for you. The only true reach will be Texas, which is extremely competitive.

@billcsho IL home state, included in the Op. I’m reaching for Computer Science and therefore taking AP CS next yer and plan to get Letter of Rec from the teacher

@survivorfan Thanks so much I love hearing that! U of I UC is my main goal to get into.

Sorry that I missed your home state above. For IL resident, you should be a match to high match for UIUC engineering depending on major. For CS, it would be likely a high match. I don’t see why you want to go to UT Austin as it would be more expensive and is harder to getting into as oos student.

If you apply to the engineering program,
UIUC: low reach
Purdue: high match
Wisconsin: accept
Illinois: accept
Texas-Austin: accept

Do you know that for schools which have strong engineering programs (UIUC) you would have a better chance of being accepted if you applied as undecided?

I don’t know enough about the selectiveness of the program to chance you accurately, but if you’re into coding it might help if you develop a couple of apps over the summer and that would tie in nicely with the club you want to make. If you don’t know how to code then maybe use code academy to learn during the summer.

@billcsho Thanks for the high match, it’s great to hear that. For Austin, I’m not sure why but I’m trying to get into a school with a good focus on computer science and U of T is a great school.

@nflpackers96 Hm, why do you think I would be a low reach? What should I do to improve? To reiterate, I am enforcing a computer science or engineering set high school plan with a good gpa and great ACT score. Oh and yes I’ve heard about going in as undecided but by doing that I can’t express my love for computers and such as much as I could in my essay because for undecided it would be more general than specific, correct? Thanks a lot for the chance nflpackers96! I really hope I can get into UIUC as I think being instate will help a lot.

@supersoaker101 I will be learning Java this summer and attempt to begin app development. Thanks for the suggestion!

I think that, based on your grades, that all are decent matches.
It is a little hard to judge without seeing SAT and AP scores. Also, the lack of AP calculus and chemistry caught my eye.

But, that being said, your GPA is close to what mine was (3.86 unweighted), with a comparable number of AP and honors courses, though I think I had a few more STEM AP/honors classes than you. The number of extracurriculars are also comparable, though I did a various academic competitions as an individual and on school teams, which I did not see you listing.

Purdue was my safety school, which I had received my acceptance letter less than 2 weeks after sending in my application. I had also gotten into MIT, Caltech, Stanford, Princeton, Yale, Columbia, Cornell, Johns Hopkins. I was rejected by Harvard, Duke and Rice. So, I think that your chances for the schools you listed are pretty good, unless your AP scores and SATs are not very high.

@nakoruru As @billcsho said, ACT is more than welcomed if not the better option to send into any of these Midwestern Schools as the standard test, contrary to the East coast, all of these schools should accept the ACT just as well.

I will try my hardest to get those AP Scores at 4’s or 5’s and get that 32+ ACT. Your ECs (nakoruru) are and should be higher than mine anyways considering the schools you applied to have that implied; however I will boost my ECs up a bit more this year and next year.

“Also, the lack of AP calculus and chemistry caught my eye.” Yes, that is indeed the problem I have (for AP Calculus, that is). I wasn’t able to and am not able to take AP Calculus because of the order of classes that our school goes on. I can only go as far as Pre-Calculus Honors at this point. In terms of AP Chemistry, I actually just changed my schedule from AP Chem to AP Physics B today in school because I’ve heard its the better option for Engineering/Computer Science. Should I switch it back again? I feel more comfortable taking AP Physics next year because I’m already taking Honors Physics this year + it should be just as good of a class with sciences/math.
