I’m a female living in India, US citizen and I want to do electrical engineering (urm? orm?)
GPA: not sure (I’m in an IB school), but I think weighted is around 4.44 (that’s what Florida tech calculated it as)
my IB projected grades:
HLs Math 6 Physics 6 Computer sci 7
SLs Spanish B 7 English A lit 6 Chem SL 7
(total 39/42)
SAT:
Single highest = 2200 (730M 740 CR 730 W) w/ 7 essay lol
Superscore = 2250(780M 740 CR 730 W)
Math level 2 = 800
Physics = 780
EC’s: (really random )
captain of junior school baddy team
did some machine learning stuff
used Khan academy to teach math to underprivileged kids
led community project to paint murals on walls of of local primary school
some MUN awards
designed some software for physics teacher
managed website for this math education company
+some other community service stuff etc etc
recs: one of them should be really good from my comp teacher talking about how I managed to achieve top and surpass her expectations even though I had no prior background of the subject and java unlike others in the class…
the other should be decentish
essays: unique at best I guess, talked about my own culture I barely know and linked it to engineering.
wanted to know my chances in:
- Carnegie Mellon (applied to CIT & MCS, did the interview and submitted some math research supplement about fractals and matlab coding)
- UC Berkeley (got the letter of recommendation request and leadership scholarship qualification thingamajig if that helps)
- UCLA
- Georgia Tech
- UIUC
- UMich
- UCSD
8)Virginia Tech
already got into Florida tech with 19k half tuition merit scholarship btw (They responded 2 days after I applied xD)
thanks in advance!
I think you have pretty good chances for Georgia Tech, UIUC, and Virginia Tech. CMU will be a reach, and I think Berkeley will be too. Good luck!!
Carnegie Mellon: Low Reach
UC Berkeley: Reach
UCLA: High math/low reach
UIUC: low match
U Mich: Match
UCSD: Low Match
idk much about georgia tech and virginia tech, but based off the acceptance rates, you have a really good shot. best of luck to ya!
thanks a bunch, guys!
I’m kinda banking on the Berkeley letter of recommendation thing
@fortuitous gatech’s pretty hard for non georgia residents from what I’ve heard
Anyone else?
From what I’ve heard the Berkeley letter of recommendation goes either to random students or to those on the border - both which don’t really sound like a for sure acceptance. Also, being a girl greatly boosts your chances for Georgia Tech.
tiny update:
UIUC: accepted (computer engineering)
Georgia tech: wait-listed
Don’t understand why anyone who’s willing to be full pay for expensive OOS schools wouldn’t just apply to private schools.
I’d be surprised if you didnt get into UCLA and UMich. CMU and Berkeley might not happen because there are lots of qualified international applicants from India, so it’s hard to say. Congrats on your acceptances so far!
@GMTplus7 1) If I register to vote and stuff, do I not become in-state after a year?
2) The OOS schools happen to be nice for my major… and I applied to a mixture of OOS and private.
@anotherdude thanks!
I’ll try to keep my expectations realistic
accepted into irvine. davis, sd, and la. : D
I’M SO HAPPY ABOUT LAAAAAAA XD
Is Berkeley being too hopeful?
Also how are you faring @anotherdude
@adhebbar congratulations on your acceptances! You might get in, but Berkeley engineering (especially EECS) is so competitive that all you can do is hope lol.
I got rejected from UCLA lol (I still dont know why). I got into UIUC for CS, Gtech for CS/Applied Math and I also got a likely letter from Columbia though
@anotherdude congrats on the likely and acceptance that’s amazing.
as for LA, all I can say is that they’re crazy picky about CS (Being the birthplace of the internet and all). Plus being an Asian male and international doesn’t help.
Also I didn’t apply to eecs Berkeley (I was too scared lol). I applied to math & stat under engineering. But you’re right, cal engineering is super competitive.
I agree with the above. Cal and CMU seem like high reaches, just as anotherdude stated the international competition especially for Cal is insane. However UCLA is an amazing place, and you should be extremely happy with it
Edit: Last year Cal recorded an 8.8% acceptance rate for internationals, which is infact lower than half the ivies!
@ShaunakK98 you’re right. Thanks, and congo on Cal.
I’m actually divided between UIUC and UCLA atm. UIUC is ranked higher for almost every possible engineering field (top 5) and since I’m a citizen, its about 15k cheaper. And there’s the whole thing about UC budget cuts.
But LA is ranked higher overall, and has a better brand name. Also, I like the location of LA way more than UIUC which is in the middle of nowhere.
@adhebbar , UCLA if I were you!
@graceann @ShaunakK98 @anotherdude
major update: I got into CMU CIT (for any branch of engineering I want!!!) I guess they like girls in stem.
got rejected from Berkeley but I don’t care about that anymore xD
I guess i’m going to cmu for electrical/computer engineering. 70k tho…sigh. Hoping for some fin aid.
congratulations on getting into CMU! That’s amazing. I was waitlisted at both, CMU (for SCS) and Berkeley (for EECS) haha
@anotherdude ty.
but didn’t you get into cmu for your second/third choice?
@adhebbar Congratulations!!!
