Chance Me - Boston University

Hey friends!

Please chance me for Boston U. For the record, I go to one of the highest ranking high schools in my state.

Here’s a quick rundown:
SAT: 1590.
GPA: 3.98.
APs: 9 so far, seven 5s and two 4s.
Subject SATs: Haven’t taken these yet.
Unless my state raises the bar this year, I’ll be a National Merit Semifinalist.

So far so good, right? Well, in terms of extracurriculars…things take a different turn. I have essentially nothing before the start of high school except stories I wrote in my spare time that never went beyond my personal flashdrive. I was class president and the president of a small club I founded at my high school. While I am not in the MUN club at my high school, I have attended three conferences and won one position paper award.

As for volunteering, I basically started this summer and have been doing odd jobs at markets and the food bank; I have about 50 hours at the moment. I am also doing a fairly selective (5 percent admittance) political affairs internship until early November. For what it’s worth, I’ve run a political debate server online since the summer before sophomore year. This may not matter, but I am of Middle Eastern descent and my parents have been divorced for eight or nine years.

Thank you in advance for your thoughts!

Hi, well based on what you’ve written, I’d say you’re a total slam-dunk. It would be astounding if you weren’t accepted there. SAT subjects tests…why would you even take them? As for extracurriculars, I don’t think it’s even a good idea to list or detail pre-high school things. What you have done recently is quite adequate!

No one is a “slam dunk” for adnission to BU. They may see you as someone who is using BU as a safety school and deny or waitlist you.

You will need to show interest.

Your scores are great, and don’t worry too much about your extracurricular list (I didn’t have many either), plus extracurriculars in middle school don’t really count for anything to college admissions anyway. You need to be sure to show your passions your commonapp essays, be specific about why you think BU is the school for you. If you’re sure BU is your top choice, apply ED. Take the subject tests for sure, it’s just another good thing to have, and plus if you’re applying to CAS (College of Arts and Sciences)/get into CAS, there’s a 2 year language requirement for graduation that you can bypass with a 560 on a language subject test. You didn’t say what major you’re going for, but just be warned some are easier than others, both in terms of getting into and in talking about courseload (i think it’s college of engineering that’s especially hard). Good luck!
