Chance Me? Cal, UCLA, CWRU, U Mich, UW-Madison, UDub, etc.

I am currently a senior and wanted to see what the CC forum has to say about my chances. I have a variety of reach schools that I might list, but the ones in my title are my top choices. What are my chances?

University of Washington
Ohio State University (safe school)

Thanks!

All are matches. Very impressive.

Thank you! I do have a few other lists of colleges I have looked at. The ones I listed initially are chosen by my top choices while factoring in my ability to get into the school. I have discussed college admissions with many people who have graduated and have come up with different lists according to how our school has done historically. Here are my “low reach” schools, as I believe they are called. I’m generally less interested in these colleges, but I still plan to apply.

Boston College
Emory
Georgetown
University of Miami (FL)
NYU
USC
Vanderbilt

I also have a variety of “high reach” schools, just in case I get into one or two of them. These are mostly just by chance. Here they are:

Carnegie Mellon
UChicago
Duke
Johns Hopkins
UNC Chapel Hill
Northwestern
Rice
Stanford
Wash U St. Louis

So? What are my chances?

What is your intended major and where is your home state?

You do have decent scores, but your GPA is lacking for top schools. Your overall wGPA appeared to be ~3.7. What would be your uwGPA without the 1.1 and 1.2 weighing factor? Would it be around 3.4 or less? It seems your junior uwGPA would be ~3.4 as you had 3 AP and 3 honor classes. If this is the case, most of the schools on your original list would be reaches. You should have better chance at OSU and WISC.

I have a GPA of 3.1 I took Full IB courses in 11th grade and got a 23 on act and a 1630 on SAT did tracks my juniors year and currently volunteering and a nursing home and hospital I I am doing IB Physics IB Biology IB Math IB history and english what are my chances of getting into a University in NYC

^ Do not steal a thread. Post your own.

I’m sorry, I wasn’t clear on my GPA. My weighted GPA is, cumulatively, 3.93. The scores I listed was my weighted GPA AFTER said year, e.g. 3.5 weighted in 9th, 3.75 in 10th, 3.93 currently. After recalculating, I think my weighted GPA for freshman and Sophomore year should be higher.

Unweighted 9th: 3.73
Unweighted 10th: 3.71
Unweighted 11th: 3.62

Anyway, my weighted GPA is 3.93 i.e. this is the number that appears on my transcript. Throughout Junior year my weighted GPA bounced between 4.15-4.25, which brought up my GPA significantly.

I hope that helps, billcsho. I appreciate your input, and I hope you’ll respond and perhaps re-evaluate. Will anybody else chance me?

Thanks!

Also, I do not have a specific major in mind yet. My home state is Ohio, which I know is not ideal for getting into UC Berkeley. I live about 5 min. from OSU, so that’s part of why I consider it my safe school.

UC Berkeley: low reach
UCLA: low reach
Case Western Reserve University: match
University of Michigan: high match
University of Wisconsin - Madison: match
University of Washington: match
Ohio State University: low match

—Two questions: What state do you currently live in? And…what do you (if you know) plan to major in?—That has a rather large effect on which schools will be more likely to accept you…That being said, UC-Berkley, UCLA and Michigan are almost #1,2 and 3 respectively—TOUGH schools to get into for out-of-state students…Depending on what they feel “YOU can bring to the school” (“Admissions Speak,” of course).
----Case Western, Wisconsin, Washington and Ohio State should be no problem for you… Good luck!

@scderek4: Thank you for the chance!

@Shineon83: You must not have seen above, but I listed my home state. I live in Ohio, and I know that takes down my chances of getting into UC schools. It is news to me to hear that Michigan is the same way, as I have not gotten that impression from any visits or information I have received from the university. Nonetheless, thank you!

It seems like your unweighted GPA is around a 3.7. That is a bit low probably for UCLA and Berkeley. I would consider them a reach. You do know OOS tuition is very high for those two schools and they will probably not offer you any aid based on merit?

For UMich, your uwGPA is below admission average (3.85) and your ACT is slightly above average. Assuming you are applying LSA (not for engineering or Ross), Umich would be a high match to low reach for oos. WISC should be a match to low match for you. UCLA and UCB would be low reach. Note that UC do not count freshmen grades which make your GPA even lower.

@Rousse54: Money is not really an issue for me. My goal is to go to the best college possible.

@billscho: I did not know that UC discounts freshman grades, that’s good to know. I am planning to apply to LSA, an ideal choice for an undecided major. Do the UC schools look primarily at one year in high school, or do they only discount freshman grades?

Look for UC GPA calculation on the web. There is even calculators available.

Chances for UW Madison are excellent. I am a parent of a Madison High School Student (SR) and I went to the SR Presentation last night and they talked specifically about UW MAdison – admittants sit at a 3.75 or higher and 28 ACT. You’ll do great!
