Chance Me, Chance Back

I've posted this a few times, but I apparently can't edit anything in. I've added a few critical things since my last post as well. If it helps, I'm Asian and live in Michigan. I also go to an underserved high school, where the average ACT score is an 18.

Chance for:
University of Michigan Ann Arbor (EA)
University of Chicago (EA)

GPA: 3.99
ACT: 28 (sad, I know)
Top 3% in class
AP's:
BC Calc.
Chemistry
English
Physics

EC's:
Volunteered at hospital for 200+ hours and eventually became a trainer, which is a leadership role, and I advised the executive volunteer coordinator
Volunteered at veterinary clinic for 1200+ hours
Volunteered and Shadowed at a hospital in India
Volunteered at a local temple on weekends
Conducted research at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor in Genetics (actual research, not volunteering to clean dishes and whatnot)
4 Year Boys' Varsity Tennis
2 Year Head Captain of Boys' Varsity Tennis Team
NHS member since 2010
NHS Sectetary since late 2012
Calculus Club President
HOSA
Program where I assisted elementary school children in scientific activities and attended field trips to places such as the University of Michigan hospital systems
Orchestra from 2010-2012
Section Leader in Orchestra for 2 Years

I’ve also gotten recommendation letters from reliable teachers, my volunteer coordinator, and my lab manager from the University of Michigan.

UMich- High Match
UChicago- Reach

Thank you for the chance. I’d say your ACT is simply way too low for UChicago, but UMichigan is achievable. Your ECs are very good, letter will greatly help, and if your GC stresses your excellence in your high school compared to others, that can explain the low ACT. UMichigan- match UChicago- high reach

UMich- High Match/low reach
UChicago- Reach

UMich Match

U Mich Match
Chicago High Reach

I think U Chicago is definitely a high reach mainly because of your scores. However, you still have a valid chance because you have challenged yourself and done well academically while also being very active within the community and in demonstrating your passion for sciences, etc. Michigan is either a low reach or high match mainly because of the score, but I would be very surprised if you did not get accepted there. Best of luck!

I agree with the general concensus of what people on your post have been saying. I’d say that U chicago is a reach and UMich is a high match. Your ECs are impressive as well as your grades, but the act is way low. Also it would be helpful if I knew your sat 2s. However, from what I’ve heard uchicago doesn’t care as much about test scores, but place more emphasis on your essay. Lastly and unfortunately your ethnicity won’t help you. Anyway, best of luck!

Also, you chanced me, but you didn’t tell me what you thought my chances were for penn, which is the school I’m most interested in. Can you please chance me for penn. Thanks!

University of Michigan Ann Arbor (EA)- I would say you have a 75y/25n for this one… maybe even an 80y/20n. I think your odds are solid for this one.
University of Chicago (EA)- this is a reach for everybody, but I don’t think that should discourage you. Although your ACT score is low (relative to their scores), if you have a really good essay, paired with your impressive EC’s, I think you could definitely have a shot.

And thanks for the chance!!

U Mich Match
Chicago- Reach for everyone

Chancing back, fellow michanian asian! I think your ECs and leadership roles are pretty solid; UMich really looks for leadership experience in applicants. Your ACT is in the 25th percentile for UMich, and doesnt even reach the 25th percentile for UChicago; the colleges care more about the GPA over the ACT score though, since the ACT is 100% critical thinking and says almost nothing about the student. AWESOME GPA. Sucks that a lot of Admission advisors only let in a certain amount of asians because they think there’s too many of us and expect us to score higher than all the other ethnicities, nothing we can do to change that. If you’ve got stellar essays, I’d vote almost a definite YES for Umich, and a MAYBE, BUT LIKELY for UChicago. Only saying ALMOST and MAYBE because nothing is definite; even some of the kids with the best credentials are waitlisted/deffered or even rejected. Hope to see you in UMich!

University of Michigan Ann Arbor (EA) - Accepted
University of Chicago (EA) - Waitlisted

Chance me back btw

Bump

I know this I a repeat but UMitch is almost a safety, a low match
Uchicago is a low reach (it’s your test score)

you should be able to get in, especially with that GPA.
UMich-math
UChic-reach

You have a chance at umich-high match
