CHANCE ME? Crush my ivy league hopes.

I feel bad when I see other people's stats on here. I thought mine were pretty good compared to others in my school. But ALAS seems I don't compete THAT well with the rest of the country.

My intended major is neuroscience- pre-med track.
My question is can I get into....

IVYS? (East coast) Brown!, Yale, Columbia, Cornell.

EXTRA CURRICULARS

Plan for 12th: Varsity Sailing, TWO semesters. AND a PART in the school's production.

This summer I attended a Neuroscience Program at Northwestern College.

The description: Campers participate in electrophysiology and neuropharmacology experiments. They dissect a sheep brain, use computer simulation to dissect a human brain, and record the electrical activity of their own brains. Northwestern Neuroscience Camp also includes a field trip to the University of South Dakota’s Sanford School of Medicine to visit the gross anatomy (cadaver) lab and active neuroscience research labs.

We watched research in action, participated in college lectures, and did many labs. An enriching experience.

I Volunteer at the Hospital-- I now work in the Cancer Center at Stony Brook University Hospital. I file and fill out medical information, assist nurses, help out patients when ever they need me

Every year I donate blood, do the 'Walk for Beauty' marathon for breast cancer research, and World Vision's 30 Hour Famine. and more comm service later

worked at Quiznos summer of 08..

I am HOPING to work/intern in a lab summer of senior year.

For something interesting, I started Motorcycling at 16. I'm part of the 'chirstian motorcyclist association' Its a suzuki katana. I don't know if that will stand out? I go on 'charity runs' a lot. (Such as guardians of the children ride to protect victims of child abuse and the pediatric brain tumor foundation's Ride for Kids)

I'm also a talented writer (won a 50$ prize in 9th for creative writing contest out of the grade) and photographer (published in schools art mag) Im into ART. The admission essay will be great.

if you want to do pre-med, I highly recommend simply going to your top state school (especially if its a top college like U Mich, UCB, UT Austin, etc), unless of course you live in a really crappy state like Montana or Maine. So anyway, if you go to a public school in your state for pre-med, you can EASILY get close to a 4.0 and won’t have to shell out $40,000 a year on tuition.

Well, I really want to major in neuroscience, and If I went to a state school, It’d HAVE to be my state (NY). Stony Brook University (the best for science) dosen’t offer neuro for undergrads…
Plus I’d kind of like to get out of the state. And I’m not sure If Id be comfortable in a huge school. My highschool is only about 365 people.

Oh forgot to mention I go to a private college prep school. Low income/female. First generation college student.

Bump… please

The Ivys will be very difficult for you; however you should have a good chance at the rest on your list if you do well first semester senior year.

Actually, Stony Brook does have a neuro track for undergrads within the biology major. Plus pretty much every field (bio, psych, linguistics, philosophy, computer science, etc.) that can be considered a part of an interdisciplinary neuroscience major has a very strong department at Stony Brook, and a lot of professors are doing top-notch neuroscience research; I know several people who graduated from Stony Brook and are now in great neuroscience grad programs. As for SBU being too big… I also went to a tiny high school (<60 people in my graduating class!) and thought Stony Brook would be way too big, but it turned out to be a perfect fit. I know it’s hard to imagine now, but once you settle into a routine the school really doesn’t feel huge or overwhelming at all. Looking back, I think I would have felt claustrophobic at a smaller school! So maybe you don’t have to eliminate your in-state options after all :)
